Suggestions for Athens and Surrounds

We (63 & 67) are planning 7-8 days in Greece on our way home from Israel in late October. We know we want to spent 2 days in Athens and are looking for ideas for the rest. We are independent travelers who enjoy almost every aspect of travel. Can we get to an island or two- if so any recommendations? Are there any sites near Athens that might be good for a day trip?

h..there are some options..for a few days you can go to beautiful naflpion..a beautiful coastal city 2 hours drive away from athens..you take the KTEL intercity bus from athens bus station in kiffisos area and a few hours later you are there...to get to kiffisos bus station there is the X93 bus starting from the airport and ending in kiffisos..here is the X93 route..

and here are nafplon pics

.beautiful city.great architecture,2 castles..and a good base for some archeological sites around the area..

if you want to have an island experience you can either spend the 5 remaining days somewhere like rethymno town or chania town (both in the island of CRETE) or rhodes town in the island of rhodes where you have the best chance for good weather this time of year...or you can split these 5 days between let's say 3-4 days in nafplio and 2 days in one of the saronic golf islands ,which are close to athens, just 1 hour ferry ride from athens' main port,pireaus..

the saronic islands are hydra,spetses,poros,agistri,aigina...for more details about them check this link.they are smaller islands,so good for a couple of days, not the whole 5 days

if you want to go to the bigger-most known islands like i said rhodes town and crete are the best bet for good weather..from crete i would suggest rethymnon town and chania town..as you see i suggest towns rather than purpose built resorts because they have local permanent residents and don't shut down for winter,so you won't feel like you are in a ghost town like with the rest of the islands..

flying is the best way should you choose one of them..by late october ferrys can be cancelled due to bad weather..plus flying is much quicker, especially for crete the ferrys take 8-9 hours and with only 5 days you would lose much of your time travelling..
