From Athens to Thessaloniki by Train

Hi,

I decided to buy a train ticket from Athens to Thessaloniki, it is faster than bus and cheaper. I found a 19 Euro ticket for second class.

I've heard that, sometimes trains are not working because of strikes. Are there any possibility for a strike on 17 October?

Also, for intercity trains, what is the difference between first class and second class, is it worth it to buy 1st class?

Thank you!

i don't know the difference between the first class and the second class,,maybe someone who knows can jump in..i guess it is up to you and your budget to decide that.

i haven't heard about a strike on the 17th.keep checking this site,it has accurate updates on strikes,so if one happens you will know it days before and plan according to that

Second class is fine,I always travel to Thessaloniki second class,it is cheaper but not faster, timetable states that there are delays waiting the trains they come the opposite direction in every trip,it takes around 6 hours some times more.

Bus costs 39 euros,I do prefer the train because of the price.

I travelled 2nd class at the end of Sept and it was great. Our trip took 5 hrs and it was relaxing. We bought our tickets the day before we travelled as I didn't want to pre purchase in case of strikes as well. We didn't experience any problems. Lots to see and if you share a cabin with nice people the time flies. Great way to see the country. We would do it again.

Enjoy your trip.
