Athens City Centre Visit - a few questions

Good Afternoon

We will be staying for 1 night at the Sofitel Athens Airport, We are landing mid morning (no jet lag as only a hop and a jump from Istanbul) and leaving for Kefelonia the following day. We would like to visit the Acropolis and then maybe a short visit to Plaka/Monastiraki for a bite to eat before heading back to the hotel in the evening.

We are planning on using the metro (Line 3 - blue) from the Airport to Syntagma Station (change to Line 2 - red) for one stop to Acropoli Station - is that correct?

Coming back using the metro from Monastiraki to the airport (Line 3 - Blue)?

I take it we would need to get two - two persons single ticket which covers us to and from the airport/ city centre?? I am correct in thinking this is 14 euros per ticket for two people so 28 euros???

As we will be visiting in the late afternoon could someone confirm the latest ticket entry for a weekday June visit to the Acropolis?

and finally my final question what exit should we take from the Acropolis to Plaka/Monastiraki.

Thank you

Madison

Hey and welcome Madison:-) You've got the metro lines to/from nailed:-) The ticket cost is 8E p/p and 14 for 2 pax.. not 28;-) FWIW, a cab costs 35E to the center to/from the airport;-) As far as Akropolis, seeing how you'll be there in June which is a peak travel month, it stays open till sunset.. or about 8p! Have a fun day.. and enjoy!

It's 14 for 2 pax indeed, but one way, so the total for two two persons tickets will be 28 euros ( 14 for one ride, 14 for return ).

Acropolis' opening / closing times change slightly from year to year' peak season closing time is 7.30pm - 8pm, may vary from year to year.

Last admission is 30 minutes before closing time, of course you need more than that to visit properly; i 'd count for a visit around 90 minutes, so i 'd plan bein up there at around 6pm.

Try to fit it in a visit to the Acropolis Museum if you can: it will greatly enhance your visit to the Acropolis.

Thank you all for your replies and if we have the time will also try to squeeze in the Museum.

If anyone is able to help me with what exit should we take from the Acropolis to Plaka/Monastiraki that would be a great help.

Acropolis has several entrances, but only one major entrance, on the West.

Exiting the subway through "Akropoli" station, take escalators to the left, on top of the esclators turn left, and then left again :) It's less than 30 seconds and you 'll be on the main pedestrian alley that 'll get you to the main entrance. Acropolis and the Rock will both be visible by the main pedestrian alley.

Finishing your Acropolis monument visit you can descend to Plaka on either direction.

Roughly speaking, Plaka "embraces" the rock from North, to East and to South. So, West is the main entrance and the forest, all other three sides is Plaka.

To reach Plaka after finishing your visit and ending in the ticket plteau, either turn to the right towards Mars Hill and walk on the pedestrian street, or turn left heading back to the subway station and Acropolis Museum, to reach Plaka by its Easternmost parts.

Check the map here:

and here:

So basically you walk around the Hill to reach Plaka on the other side.

You can also see the maps in Google Earth mode, pressing the "Earth" button. It explains more. Basically Acropolis Hill is in the middle and everything else is around :)

Please keep in mind the first link is a general map provided here for those heading from the subway station to the monument and then to Agora / Monastiraki.

Second map is actually how to reach Plaka after the visit.

The best way to go from the Acropolis to Monasteraki square is to walk down a beautiful paved pedestrianised wide walkway. It takes approx 15 minutes , and halfway down it becomes lined with cafes , bars and restaurants. So you can choose one of these and enjoy your meal looking back up at the Parthenon in the background. It is spectacular, the prices are reasonable and there's a nice relaxed atmosphere all around. The start of the walkway is at the area where the hop on and off tour buses stop. There are hostess guides around to help if needed. When you come to the end of the walkway , take a right turn, which leads directly to Monasteraki square and the Metro to the airport.
