Holiday in Greece

We are 4 matured couples from Pune India planing to be in athens and skiathos in June 2014. Whilst our skiathos stay is fixed from 7 th to 14 th ( staying at nostos village) we are undecided about what to do in athens before we go to skiathos ! Flights to and fro India are from athens only.

1 how many days should we keep for athens ? We don't want to be rushed in sightseeing. So one place a day !!

2. Which area should we stay in so it is central ? We are looking at a budget hotel with breakfast

3. Is public transport good ?

4. Can anyone suggest an iternary please for both athens ans skiathos

Thanks

Hi there

We can't suggest a full itinerary for your trip, that's not what Trip Advisor is all about. We can certainly give you some ideas and suggestions but ultimately, you need to decide what you want to see and the only way to do that is to read a decent guide book to Athens then repost here with some specific questions if required.

"How many days for Athens" totally depends upn how in depth you wish to be. Generally, two FULL days is considered bare minimum, three FULL days to be reasonably thorough, and more if you wish to take in some of the museums. You can easily spend a full day in the National Archaeological museum.

All of Athens' major sites are within a very compact central area, no need for public transport, all can be easily and safely walked to from any hotel in a central location and most are close to each other so you can easily fit in a few each day without rushing.

For a reasonably priced hotel, look at the Attalos which sits at the southern end of Athinas St, by its junction with Monasteraki Square, very central and very close to many top sights.

Leave Athens until last, connect to Skiathos when you arrive in Athens airport, saves lots of time and gets you to the island on day one. Return to Athens for your time there after Skiathos, that way you are back on the mainland in plenty of time for your flight back to India. It's always better on the last day to be running a little late and be just a 45 minute ride from the airport, then to be 200 miles away on an island.

If you really want to plan your Athens sightseeing in so very leisurely a fashion, seeing one place a day, you will need at least three weeks in this exciting city, so full of wonderful things to see!

Please read a good guide book - the Rough Guide is excellent. Get a feeling for Athens, its ancient sites, its museums, its culture, its people. When you have an idea of what you'd like to see and do, come back here with questions and you'll get help in refining your plans.

As a rule of thumb, though, I'd suggest that it's perfectly possible, without getting into a rush, to see two sites and one museum each day. And in that case, I think a full week in Athens would be a good length of time to plan for.

Hi there

You can keep tabs on flights from Athens to Skiathos here although at present, the flights are only listed as far as February 2014.
