Athens center is tiny and walkable so anywhere you stay will be close to the sights,still Syntagma,Plaka,Monastiraki are the best areas.

Agree with the above, but Monastiraki is my favorite place to stay, especially at the Attalos Hotel on Athinas St., just a short walk from Monastiraki Sq., Central Markets, the Plaka, Acropolis, Psiri, etc. The closer you are to the major sites in Athens the easier it is to get around.
