Excited to be visiting one of the oldest cities in the world

I just wanted to share my excitement for visiting one of the oldest cities in the world

I am already a true ambassador for the islands of Geece (Kefalonia being my absolute favourite) and thought that it was time that I visited the country's capital in Athens

I have 14 days, 12 hours and 2 minutes before take off (not that I'm counting)

I just wanted to say a massive thank you for all of the posts on this forum as they have added to my excitement for this magnificent city

καλό ταξίδι

:) :) :)

hi lozzinge,i am sure you already have the info you need ,but here are things to do in athens

tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g189400-i194-k47…

tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g189400-i194-k5999…

and you may have heard of anafiotika, the island-like neighborhood anafi island residents built when they came to athens..it's near plaka area, under the acropolis

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQ5TLMTu3kA

include a day in thisio (served by thisio metro station, green line) ,for food-drink-coffee at daytime, especially if it's weekend,to see the coffee culture, with greeks playng backgammon enjoying a day out..it's a good area..avoid omonoia.

and have fun!athens is not as near as piqturesque as greek islands but it has tons of history, more than you can absorbe.

Πω Πω Αθανάσιο!

There is some great information in there for me

I must admit that I'm definitely heading for all of the obvious favourites but one of the places that keeps 'popping' up as a suggestion is Glyfada

It wasn't on my original itinerary but it is now

Thank you so much

Hi,

If you are hanging around in Athens for a few days you could visit Pan's Cave. It is to be found in Mt. Parnitha. Worthwhile, especially so if you like hiking:

Definitely AjarnAndy

We plan to walk EVERYWHERE

It's the only way that I can be sure to burn the calories after eating the wonderful Greek traditional dishes that we're looking forward to...

...kleftico, stifado and gyros in particular

Can't wait

I managed to get to Athens for the first time in November last year, it is just an amazing experience and difficult to find the words to fully describe it!

Enjoy!!!

@athanasios is there an updated list of that first link? It is a very comprehensive list but maybe a bit outdated since it was created in 2011 (minus the historical sites of course lol)?

Agree that Athens is fantastic and I keep returning. Will be there this Oct. Also agree that Anafiotika is a must in addition to the Central Markets on Athinas St., Psiri District, don't forget the changing of the guards at Syntagma Sq., the food, archeological sites, museums, the food (again!) the Greek people and in fact people from all over the world.
