Only have 5 hours to see Athens, as it is one of our stops on our Costa cruise. What is the best and most affordable way of seeing the best of Athens?
There is no way to see such a complex, huge & historical city in 5 hours, save it for another time.Edited: 03 May 2014, 17:56
Thanks you are right but if I wanted just to see the ACROPOLIS could it be done?
Hey and welcome judopete:-) That is indeed a very limited amount of time for Athens.. even via a cruiser.. nonetheless, am assuming there is an optional excursion offered you are not interested in.. so in order to save time, would simply grab a cab (you're looking at approx. 20E give or take since it's on meter and traffic dependent.. takes approx. 20 min or so) and head straight to the Akropolis.. from there, you can either opt for a quick walk around area there .. Plaka.. possibly head to Syntagma Square and check out the infamous Evzones and the Changing of the Guards if you nail the time right.. or head to the New Akropolis Museum:-) Of course, all dependent on what you're interested in seeing/doing in the limited time.. whether sites, museums.. ;-)
FWIW, chances are there will be others also looking to get into the City.. The Akropolis is the usual/popular site most head to.. maybe you can find another couple.. or someone who wants to share the ride and split the cost.. taxis will hold up to 4 pax! Best.. and EnJOY!
If you take a taxi and do it very fast yes ,a taxi from the cruise ship doc to Acropolis will cost you around 15-20 euros, you will need 20-30 minutes to reach it and the entrance costs 12 euros pp.
taking a taxi to it and back,a very short visit is possible
Thanks Lista for your advice great idea this is my first cruise "not that you would guess" :0) just want to see something of where we stop.
My pleasure judopete:-) Believe most here are pretty surprised at the limited time available.. I know most cruisers are fast, but usually allot at least 8 hours or so for this magnificent City.. 5 hours sounds extremely limited but you can certainly do the Akropolis.. possibly a quick walk through the area or possibly the Museum.. depends on how much time you spend up at *the hill*;-) Let us know how it goes.. and keep enjoyin'!
You will never be sorry that you took your five hours to see the center of ancient Athens! Yes, do take the trip in and go directly to the Acropolis. Really, you will spend your first two hours at the Acropolis itself. Then walk all the way around it and you will see the main sights. Your Acropolis ticket is admission to the other ruins. You can have lunch on a fabulous patio or rooftop. What day could be better? Wear your passport, credit cards and larger cash in a belt pouch hidden under your clothes. The metro takes a little more than an hour but if you are at traffic hour then you can avoid traffic jams this way, and the ticket is 8 Euros. A taxi is faster only if there is no traffic jam. Sure, you will have to rush off before you truly want to, but you will have no regrets for visiting.Edited: 14 May 2014, 23:40
