Been there, done that?

What do you recommend for a brief shore excursion coming from a cruise ship in Pireaus (sp?)?

If you like flexibility and want to avoid large tour groups, I recommend you pick 2-3 things you really want to see and go it alone. If you want a guided tour, I recommend Katakolon Express. Didn't use them in Athens but used them for Olympia. They were good and reasonably priced. We have 2 small kids and don't like be tied to tour itineraries, so we took a cab and public transportation. Right outside the customs terminal at the cruise port there were taxis. They charged 20 Euro to the Acropolis. One of the crew told me if you walk 5 minutes outside the port, they will only charge 15. We got the Acropois before 9 am. The crowd wasn't bad and we go some decent pics at first. Within an hour it was packed. We then walked down to Filopappos Hill for a great view of the Acropolis and then thru the Agora. We let the kids play at a park outside the Agora for about 30 minutes and then ate at a cafe outside the Agora, walked about 5-10 minutes the Plaka for shopping then took the metro to the Pireaus stop. From there we took a cab, 5 Euro to the cruise terminal. In all the trip took about 6 hours. We were happy with our visit. We got to do and see what we wanted to see with out being tied to a tour group or paying the high fees for the ship's excursions.

By the title, do you mean to say that this isn't your first time in Athens?...

How much time do you have to spend?...

Hey and welcome narob:-) Have you checked out the New Akropolis Museum?;-) If into museums.. there are loads.. from the Cycladic Museum.. to the Benaki.. to the Nat'l Archaeological to name a few;-) How about a ride up to Lycabettus Hill via the funicular (teleferik) with spectacular views over the City.. and where you can also enjoy a beverage/snack?;-)

Take a look to the right here and as already suggested, check out options for a 1 or 2 day visit to the City.. see what you haven't done.. what interests you.. and go for it;-) Have fun.. and EnJOY!
