Which area to stay to see Athens and be close to the airport

Hi,

We are in Athens for 2 nights followed by a 5:30 flight to Zakynthos. Where should we stay so that we are not too far from the attraction and the things to do and - at the same time- not too far from the airport for the ridiculously timed flight? How early before the flight should we usually be at the airport for domestic flights this early?

Thanks

one hour prior to flight is fine,45 minutes too,not later, there is nothing between the airport and the city, only Sofitel is next to the airport, and it's expensive, stay in central Athens, close to Syntagma and use the express bus to the airport in early morning.

Hey and welcome ALMomen:-) There is only 1 convenient hotel.. the Sofitel.. which is right AT the airport.. anything else will require transport! Having said that, you can either opt to stay at the Sofitel and take either the metro, bus (both take approx. 40 min) from the airport.. or a cab at a flat rate of 35E by day.. to get in and out of the City during the day for some sightseeing.. or.. you can book a centrally located hotel IN the City and just get a cab back to the airport at a night cost of 50E (if you depart your hotel by around 4a, you should be good to go.. get there at least an hour prior by 4:30a;-) A cab at that hour of the morning shouldn't take more than about half an hour;-)

If you opt to stay in the City, am sure you'll get loads of recs is you state a budget spread.. lots of properties in the center close-by to sights.. walking distance.. that cover the gamut in pricing;-) Best.. and EnJOY!

Thank you so much for the helpful information. We narrowed down our choices to either New Hotel or Hilton. Which one would you favor for proximity to metro stations and activities/sites?

Thanks again

.. for convenience on close proximately to sites.. have to agree on New Hotel.. but do bear in mind with a 5:30a flight departure, the metro will not be operating.. there is the dedicated express bus X95 that runs 24X7 from Syntagma Square.. right around the corner (literally.. again, make a right turn) at Filellinon Street when you hit the Square.. the bus stop is about half way down the block in front of Citibank;-) Keep Enjoyin'!

Definitely Hilton, there is also a bus stop right in front of it and X95 bus stops there, taxi price will be the same as from New Hotel and Hilton is a MUCH better hotel with the best roof garden views and pool in Athens. It is a 20 minute walk from Hilton to Acropolis and Plaka anyhow and the sites or a cheap (3 euros or so) taxi ride. The restaurants around Hilton and close to Hilton (Pagrati,Kaisariani) are also better than the touristy Plaka ones , more "real" and of course locals prefer them.

WOW koutras l.. only 20 min to get from Hilton to Plaka.. no less Akropolis?;-) You must be a very fast walker, lol! I'd say 25 min as a minimum just to get to Syntagma Square from Hilton.. then again;-))

Hilton is indeed a good property.. and you certainly can't beat the pool.. largest in-ground in City.. but doubt you'll have much time for it! Have stayed there numerous times myself.. but thing is, and IMO.. with only 2 nights.. 1 full day.. I'd personally prefer to be in the center of the action.. being able to walk out the door and hit some sites .. return to hotel if needed, etc.. just the convenience alone for a full day would make The New Hotel a good and preferred call in this case.. again, my personal opinion here;-) Keep enjoyin' all!

If you take Vasileos Konstantinou avenue and not Vas.Sofias it is 20 minutes (I walk it every day to work),it is also maybe the best walk in Athens.
