Athens and Cyclades itinerary, please advise

Hello,

I am traveling solo to Greece the end of September beginning of October and am wondering if what I think I have planned is doable. I am arriving into Athens early morning from the U.S. staying in Athens for two nights then, using ferries, I would like to go to Paros for four nights, Naxos for four nights and then Santorini for three nights. Ferry back to Piraeus, one night in Athens then home, very early flight. I would love to see Delphi on the second day in Athens (if possible) and also Delos from either Paros or Naxos.

Any help and advice would be appreciated!

Delphi can be done in one day but it will be too tiring, see if you can cut a day from any of the islands and add it to Athens in the end of your trip.As far as I know trips to Delos are possible only from Mykonos and not the other islands. You should check if there is a ferry connection between Naxos and Santorini and note that the ferry from Santorini to Piraeus may take up to 8 hours of your precious time.

You have chosen a very "easy to do" itinerary. Start from Pireus at 07:25 in the morning to Paros with the Blue Star Delos. Buy your ticket in the port before departure. Arrival Paros about 12:00. You will be met by a lot of room-renters when the ferry arrives Paros, so no need to pre-book unless you want a spesific accomodation. The same ferry will take you on to Naxos and Santorini. One hour to Naxos and another two for Santorini.

It may be too late in season for the Delos cruises, but ask in a ticket office as soon as you have settled in Paros. The cruises starts in Paros, Naoussa, and sails like this : Paros>Naxos>Delos>Mykonos>Paros>Naxos. If they still sails, but only once a week, you may take the cruise from which suits you best, Paros or Naxos.

There is one ferry from Naxos to Santorini for this period, see if you can find a good offer with Aegean airlines for your return trip to Piraeus.

Thank you so much for your quick reply. It is comforting to know that what I am planning is doable. I am very grateful for the suggestion to fly back to Athens from Santorini, I will definitely do that! I wouldn't know what island to cut a day to see Delphi, they all sound so enchanting. Is it advisable to drive to Delphi that last day? I could arrive quite early from Santorini and still have a full day ahead of me. I am staying at the Sofitel the last night due to the early morning flight home.

Paros is fine for three nights, cut a night from there,If you rent a car with a navigator would be fine to drive to Delphi, easier to stop on the way,Galaxidi and Itea are nice places to visit and close to Delphi.

I just looked up Dolphin Hellas web site. They offer a one day escorted bus tour to Delphi daily until the end of October for 95 euros. While it is not a hard drive it is a long day and you are thinking of doing it on day 2 of your trip when you will still be jet lagged. It is probably best to let a professional drive and let you relax. The tour departs 8:45 and returns at 7. We have used Dolphin Hellas several times and they are reliable. I suspect Fantasy Travel also has a similar tour.

If you have to take a day from an Island I would drop it from Paros.

Here are some images of Delphi

stanbr your photos are absolutely beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing, Naxos looks unbelievable.

With the advice given I think I am dropping the first night in Paros and extend it to Athens to three days and head up to Delphi on the third day. If I can catch a ferry to Delos does anyone know how long it stays in Mykonos? is it just for a short while or could I walk around the port area/ town for a bit? One more thing (my head is just popping with questions right now!) what about a scooter to get around Naxos/Paros? Again, I appreciate the assistance.

Thank you for the kind words.

The day excursion from Naxos or Paros to 'Delos is 3 hours in Delos and 3 in Mykonos. Again you may be too late in the season for those excursions to be running. Check with any travel agent as soon as you arrive on your first island to see if you can book the excursion..

Hey and welcome 3882Di:-) You have some options.. and if your itinerary is not yet set in stone and are still in the process of plotting it out.. as it appears you are.. would consider a couple of changes considering you're coming the distance and will have some lag to include rubber legs to deal with upon arrival in Athens off the long haul(s).. for many, not a good time to hit the pavement in a major metropolis such as Athens that involves allot of walking/climbing;-)

Having said that, consider just flying straight out to an isle.. Santorini.. upon arrival in Athens off the trans?! You'll be at the airport anyway.. and no backtracking involved which is a huge timesaver;-) You can have your 3.. or 4 nights in Athens at the tail end keeping the itinerary running consecutively.. and again, a huge timesaver;-) Regardless, an isle makes for a great place to de-lag and get into zone;-) Take a look at www.olympicair.com/ www.aegeanair.com/ who have merged for flight schedules.. give yourself a 3-hour.. thereabouts.. time spread between flights.. especially if you arriving Athens off one of the directs and will be dealing with formalities;-) The flight takes barely 40 min.. and you're off to a great start on a fabulous isle;-)

From Santorini.. you can ferry onwards to Naxos.. onwards to Paros.. check schedules at www.gtp.gr/ www.openseas.gr/ and you can opt to either fly or ferry back to Athens for your finale there;-) You can then take a day for Delphi if you wish.. but regardless, you'll have a 3 or 4 night consecutive stay here making it convenient without splitting up the stay.. or half days here and there;-) You can then book a hotel for the stay throughout within the City.. centrally located.. and not waste your last day staying at the airport;-) Best.. and EnJOY!
