Globetrekker .....

I just watched a very interesting episide of Globetrekker with the first half dedicated to Cyprus and the second half to Crete.

They specifically looked at the Battle of Crete, visiting Souda and Maleme and then driving across the island on the route taken by the retreating allies to the south west coast. There were some very moving stories by elderly Cretans and veterans alike and it was good to hear the old Churcill quote "We will not say thereafter that the Greeks fight like heroes, but heroes fight like the Greeks!"

The programme then covered the coastal walk to Elafonisi (having to take some stretches by boat), which looked fantastic, and certainly an area I want to visit in the future, beautiful! Well worth a watch if you can catch the episode again in the next few weeks.

There's a great movie called the 11th Day about the battle for Crete- I highly recommend this for anyone going to Crete. A lot of interviews, first hand accounts. A very moving account of the war. The website is crete1941.com. There's a good trailer.

Hi Jules

This area of the south coast is definately amongst the most scenic and beautiful on the island. From the soldiers point of view, how awful to be caught up in such a terrible conflict whilst surrounded by such amazing natural beauty....
