Hi Nathan, I do not think it is compulsory but it is advisable.

Best to get one I reckon. My father in law found that out to his cost last year when he ended up in Ierapetra hospital. If he'd had a card then there would have been no payment needed at all at this public hospital. Without one he had to pay the works.

Obviously get your self insured as well but there will be an excess to pay should the worse happen. With the EHIC no payment at all if in a public hospital.

Yes they are. You can apply to update to the EHIC online using the website below.

https://www.ehic.org.uk/Internet/home.do

They take 7-10 days for delivery.
