Which resort?

We've got the chance of a one week break in 3 weeks - from around 8/9 September - and really need some sun to compensate for a heavy year all around. I know some of the islands can be mixed weather in September but can anyone advise on our best bet?

I'd thought of Crete and I've searcehd the Chania area but the flight days clash with our holiday window. The other side of Crete looks very commercialised - but perhaps I'm wrong about that?

We don;t want a 'party' resort, we like a nice beach and a handul of tavernas, something peaceful and pretty - a harbour or other village 'hub' is a bonus.

I know I keep saying it on here and probably a bit of a bore but Paleochora for me would tick those boxes. Have a look at the link and decide if it is for you

Hi there

Yes the weather in Crete around this time will be good and will still be hot. When you mention the "other side of crete" I am assuming you mean the north east coast?? as long as you stay away from from Malia and Hersonissos which are located on the north east coast then you will be fine, but the rest of the east side of the island is no more commercialised than the west of the island.

Have a look at both Agios Nikolaos and Elounda under an hour from Herkalion airport and easy access to many of the main attractions on Crete, have a look at this web site for more information:

Elounda, Agios Nikolaos , Chania or Rethymon would suit you. It depends on your budget regarding what resort ?

We enjoyed

Domes of Elounda

Gran Melia

Avil Apartments - Rethymnon.

Easy enough to check the weather go to http://www.wunderground.com and search for Heraklion.....Note that there can be heavy rain in September but it does not last for long....

For resorts it depends just how quiet you want it to be.....Hersonissos seems to get a lot of bad press, but that is Port Hersonissos, look at the villages of Koutouloufari, Piskopiano, and Ano (Old) Hersonissos too......These are much quieter than Port Hersonissos and you still have easy access to buses for travelling around...Sissi is very nice but many people find it too quiet as it is only a small place!!

Try GeorgIoupolis in the west. Lovely beach, enough tavernas to keep you happy for a week and situated between Reythmon and Chania so somewhere to go for the day

or night as there is a good bus service.....

Have you considered going independently? It can be cheaper (though not necessarily) and the advantage for the Greek economy, if you care about that sort of thing, is that the money you spend there will go into the pockets of the local people, not a travel company.

Paleochora is indeed a nice place. If you liked Sissi, you might like Paleochora even better.

Hi there,

I think it really depends on what you are wanting out of your holiday, but I always go Crete in September and the Weather as never really been too bad at most in the 2 Weeks I have had 1 day of rain. I also stay in Malia, at the Pyrgos Appartments and will be out thier from 13th September this year. I can highly recomend these as they are clean and tidy, the staff are really friendly, they are situated on the beach, and are within walking distance of the main strip and shops etc. The rooms have basic cooking facilities and safety deposit boxes and air con paid locally. The pool bar is open for snacks and meals through the day, there is also a pool table, tv in the foyer and PC with internet access for a charge.

You can book via Thomas Cook and is available direct, please see link below:
