Where to stay in Crete?

Hello,

We are traveling to Crete at the beginning of July and are looking for a place on a nice sandy beach with authentic Greek charm – village with tavernas and locals. Also, not too far from Heraklion Airport – max. 70 km. Can anyone assist, please?

Thank you

Have a look at Sissi 45 Km east of the airport. Small fishing village that has kept its charm.

Hi there

You could also add Elounda to your list, is just under an hour from Herkalion airport and just under 70 km too...ticks all your boxes :-)

Also, just within your distance, Bali to the west. However, I think Sissi could be your best option.

Hi there

Sissi sounds ideal, lots to do and see, but laid back and relaxed, pretty harbour, and a good selection of bars and restaurants, plus shops, car hire, and so on. Just so you know, if you wanted to rely on the buses to get around, you will need to walk up to the main road which is a good 30 mins pleasant stroll.

someone advised Bali, ever been to the beaches there ? Place is nice but for beaches choose south Crete, PLakias area, Frangokastllo, a bit more than 70 KM, but when you are sitting on beaches 70 min radius from Heraklion, you will go there in the end

hi

I've just re-read the original post, and although Sissi is a lovely village, if a big sandy beach is very important to you, then Sissi might not be for you. Unless of course you have transport to go to, say, the large beach near ancient Malia, or alternatively you are staying at Kalimera Kriti, which has it own "private" beach.

BTW, I think the beaches at Bali are fine. The others mentioned by Albert are also very good, but clearly a bit further.

Your answers are very helpful, it looks like we will go to Sissi. I've studied the place and its location, and yes, this is what we are looking for.

Thank you all!
