The 13th April is Good Friday: for Orthodox Greeks a day of mourning and abstinence. Many men wear black armbands. The church bells toll continuously, until the early evening, when the Epitaphios, the bier of Christ, decorated with flowers, is carried in solemn procession through the streets. The 14th is a quiet day, when people are putting the finishing touches to their preparations for the celebrations. At midnight in the churches the Easter flame is passed from person to person; the bells ring out triumphantly and people exchange the greeing ''Christos anesti'' ''Christ is risen'' and the reply ''Alithos anesti'' '' he is risen indeed''. Some people then begin to make their way home through the streets, trying to keep their candles alight, and lighting them again from other people if the flame dies. But inside the churches the solemn Easter liturgy continues for maybe two hours more and finishes with Communion. Very often the people present for the liturgy receive a packet containing a red egg, some rich Easter biscuits, maybe a litle paper ikon. Then everyone goes home to break the long Easter fast with a bowl of soup ''mayeiritsa'' made from the entrails of the lamb. Nothing is wasted! You don't say what you're doing after the 13th - the ''celebrations'' don't begin until midnight on the 14th and continue into the 15th. Will you be able to see / take part in some of that??
