3 days in Crete - please suggest an itinerary

Hi,

I am travelling to Crete in June and will be there for 3 days and 4 nights. I want to get your advice on what to do on days 2 and 3. Here is my planned itinerary with day2 and day3 to be filled in...

Night 1 - Arrive in Heraklion by Ferry, sleep in Heraklion

Day1 - See Knossos palace, archaeological museum and explore Heraklion city

Night 2 - Sleep in Heraklion

Day 2 - ?

Night 3 - ?

Day 3 - ?

Night 4 - sleep in Chania

Day4 - Explore Chania in morning and fly out to Athens in afternoon

Need some help to fill in the question marks in the itinerary.

Thank you

After your second night in Heraklion I would head west for the rest of your trip. Stop in Rethymnon for a day and either spend one night there or just head on to Chania. In my opinion you are planning too much time in Heraklion and not nearly enough in Chania.

Hi there

Much depends on how you intend getting around. I really can't fathom out how one full day in Iraklion is deemed to be " too much time in Iraklion and not enough in Chania". One full day is nothing, and you have a good plan in what you want to see on that first full day, it's achievable and gives you a good flavour of a city that is unfortunately over-looked by visitors who rarely see beyond it's busy streets and concrete apartment buildings. It's an extremely historic and interesting city and one that has been at the centre of the island's turbulent past.

From the details you have provided, Chania is there as your exit point from Crete and you quite rightly have set aside some time to see some of the city. By all means, allow more time for Chania but also remember that there are some amazing sights within easy reach of Iraklion like Lassithi, Spinalonga island, Milatos caves, Sissi, Neapoli, Kritsa and much more. But again, what to do and see on those intervening days totally depends upon what your interests are and crucially, how you will be getting around.

Hey GB I just reread the original post and I see they are planning one day in Heraklion and two nights there. I had read that as two days, thus my comment on too much time. Clearly a day in Heraklion is not spending too much time.

Hi GB,

Thanks for your reply. I will likely drive. We are a family of 5 people with 2 seniors (65+), 1 adult (me) and 2 tweens (12+). So hiking the samaria gorge is not an option, but seeing it in a lazy way is. I am currently trying to decide between the following options:

Option 1;

Day2 - Pick up rental car and drive to Phaestos. Tour Phaestos palace then drive to Rethymnon and tour the city.

Night 3 - Sleep in Rethymnon.

Day3 - Drive to Samaria Gorge and see it by car. Is this possible ? Then in afternoon drive to Chania and spend rest of evening seeing Chania. Also see Chania in morning of day4 before afternoon flight to Athens.

Option2;

Day2 - Pick up rental car and drive to Rethymnon. Tour Rethymnon city and then drive to Chania. See Chania.

Night 3 - Sleep in Chania.

Day3 - Drive to Samaria Gorge and see it by car. Is this possible ? Else take a lazy guided tour of Samaria gorge. Back to Chania in evening. Also see Chania in morning of day4 before afternoon flight to Athens.

Please let me know which of these options you recommend and also if there is a better option. Can the Samaria Gorge be seen by car on our own or do we have to take a lazy guided tour ?

Thanks much

The Samaria Gorge tour is about 13 kilometers and it is a walk alll downhill fortunately. At the end you are at the sea and have to take a ferry to Hora Scafion and then a bus back to your starting city. No Lazy tour is available. You can drive to the start of the Gorge but I am not sure what you can actually see from up there. With your crew best probably to skip the Gorge.

stanbr - is the lazy way not available now? Just to be clear what I mean, you are taken to Ch. Sfakion, get the morning ferry to Agia Roumeli, walk up the gorge usually as far as Sideroportes (or not as far or a bit further if you want), then back down to Agia Roumeli and back the same way on an afternoon ferry nd then bus. Whenever I've been to Crete, it is usually offered as an alternative to the full hike.

However, even if this isn't available, it is worth driving up to the top of the gorge past the Omalos plateau. It's a lovely drive, as long as you don't go early in the morning where you will have to compete with all the coaches, and the plateau is beautiful. There is a cafe and a big parking area at the top of the gorge, with a viewing platform. You can see down the first part of the gorge, and the mountain views are simply stunning. definitely worth a few hours of your time to do that drive.

Get in some real Crete. Drive up into the Lasithi plains and then after Hania drive down to the south west corner. Relax on the pink beaches of Elafonissi.

Hi

Please refer to my post above. I have cancelled the idea of going to Samaria gorge as we can't do the hike. So could you please suggest what to do after Heraklion On days 2 and 3. We fly out from Chania on day 4.

Thanks please provide as much details as possible in the itinerary
