I am renting a car from Heraklion airport and spending a week in eatern Crete (Lasithi). The first part of my trip in Lasithi cannot be changed. Looking for recommendations for the second part of my trip which is 5 days long, Monday through Friday, and planning to explore central and western Crete. I would like to minimize driving and spend as much time as possible seeing some authentic villages, eating good food and exploring on foot. I have created two itineraries and looking for recommendations on which itinerary seems better and any ideas you may have for the trip. I am a little flexible but definitely want to spend two nights in Chania.
Day 1-Monday: See Arch. Museum in Heraklion and Knossos. Drive to Zaros and stay there for the night.
Day 2-Tuesday: See Zaros and drive to Amari Valley. See Amari (any recommendations on which villages to visit there?) and stay in that area for the night.
Day 3-Wednesday: Drive to Rethymno and walk around the old town. Drive to Chania and stay for the night.
Day 4-Thursday: Explore Chania and surrounding area and stay for 2nd night.
Day 5-Friday: Hit a beach around Chania, relax and drive back to Heraklion for an evening flight out.
