Activities with kids

Hi there we are going to Crete in October..my hubby my self and our two children 1 who is 12 and the other is 8(one girl one boy) we were hoping to have some idea of activities to do such as water parks may be boat trips(is there a glass bottom boat) should we hire a car for trips to see more of the island??

As a family we don't want to spend all are time at the beach or by the pool we like to see places of interest..

If any one has some idea of places we can go it would be much appreciated thank you.

Crete is a very big island. Where are you going to be staying? No point in telling you about a waterpark in the west if you're based in the east - or vice versa

Hi

The closest waterpark is about an hour's drive from Rethymnon. Close to Chania. It's called "Limnoupolis": http://www.limnoupolis.gr/default.asp

You can also try the cruises with the "pirate ship" which starts from the Venetian harbour of Rethymnon:

Platanias is a very touristy area and there are supermarkets, souvenir shops, etc very close to your hotel

Hi. The old town by the harbour has many shops selling all manner of goods. There is a local market but not sure when it is although monday rings a bell and its near the church in the old town I believe. The best buys recommended are the tablecloths etc which can be bought in the local shops but just check prices as the price goes up depending on the depth of tan! I recommend hiring a car for a few days or more depending on how bored the kids get. Chania is well worth a visit but you can get there by bus if you want the adventure. Most of the trips sold by the reps are rip offs so check with your hotel for local prices. A car for four will cost about E235 for one week but make sure you get air con. There is a large lake near Chania which is nice and trips are about E15-20 EACH so the car hire starts to look cheap when there are four of you. Knossos isnt worth the trip as its about 80min travel and not much there for kids apart from an ice cream. There is a village called (Prissi?) on one of the main routes from Rethymnon to the south of the island which is worth a trip as there are 25 lions heads spouting spring water which supposedly make you younger if you drink from left and its cooler and quite pretty.

There is a glass bottomed boat that sails from Chania so you could include that in a trip there. Lots of leather goods and furs (yes furs) for sale plus lots of photo opportunities with horse and carriage round harbour etc. Make sure you try to park near harbour to left on the maps and try to get good directions for the trip as we got lost using our map and the traffic is heavy. We parked in the french supermarket Carrfours? and it cost us about E7 for a few hours so beware!

Have a great time.
