Just thought that I would do a quick trip report for anyone interested in visiting Crete at end of main holiday season.
Arrived at Heraklion airport just before midnight on Thursday 24th Oct, no fuss, straight through airport and onto transfer coach.Flying home following Thursday 31st, only B'ham and East Midlands flight to check in, no queues at all, only 1 hour between getting to airport and sitting on plane! Our flight was last one back to Birmingham for the season, so didn't need cleaning or unloading as came out to Heraklion empty, actually left 1/2 hour before scheduled take off. Obviously the best time to go through Heraklion airport!!
Weather was fantastic, no rain and only few clouds on one day. Temps were around 24-27degrees during day, and going down to about 16 at night so just need fleece or cardigan.
We were staying in Rethymnon, so decided not to hire a car and travelled around by bus to Chania and Paleochora. There are hourly buses to Chania and regular buses to Paleochora, not as frequent as during summer, but no problem for us (timetables available online or printed copy from bus station). Information display boards at bus stations are clear and easy to find which bus to catch.
Plenty of places to eat still open in Paleochora, Chania and Rethymnon. Although we found that several had already closed or were closing while we were there.
All in all a lovely time to visit as quieter than summer, but still great weather. I know this is not always the case, and we were lucky to have no rain at all, but worth a look if you are limited to school holidays. This was the second time we have visited Crete at end of Oct, and have also done Kos at same time of year.
We will be back in Crete again next year (Elounda for our third visit!).
P.S. travelled with Thomson , stayed at Astali Hotel in Rethymnon, and Haris Studios in Paleochora (booked privately)Edited: 11 November 2013, 22:21
