Easter 2014

Hi

I've just booked flights to Heralion from 18th - 26th April. I'm aware that its right at the start of the season, and wondered whether most restaurants will be open, most closed, or something in between. I haven't decided where to stay yet (the answers may influence that choice) but am intending to hire a car so we can get around easily. We'd be interested in the more local style of eatery rather than the lowest cost / taste of home variety!

Many thanks!

Sencybil.

Hi there

if you're looking to stay in or very close to Iraklion, then most places will be open as it's a large, working town with a sizeable resident population. But if you venture to the resorts, you may well find many places still shut until the start of May.

The major working towns are Iraklion, Rethymno, Chania, Agios Nikolaos, Sitia and Ierapetra, there'll be plenty to occupy yourselves in any of those places. All the ancient sites will be open and there are several within driving range of Iraklion and Iraklion itself has a wealth of antiquities. If you venture into the interior of the island, you'll find hundreds of rural villages where you'll always find a taverna and a bed for the night.

Hi Sencybil

Easter is a wonderful time to visit Crete, we stayed in Agios Nikolaos this year and experienced our first Easter there which was wonderful, especially the celebrations around the lake, just magical these start at midnight on the Saturday, followed by church services in all the churches in the town.

Easter Sunday afternoon was spent with our Greek friends and their family with the traditional BBQ lamb. :-)

Here is a you tube link to give you a feel for the celebrations :

If you do like the look of Agios then am happy to give you more details

Thanks!

Sounds like we'll be able to find plenty to keep the taste buds happy with a little forward planning...?

Also thanks for the link, will definitely have some questions in the future, as looks like even if we're not staying in Agios then this will be worth a trip.

Thanks again,

Sencybil.

Loved that video MG, was that Judas being burnt on the lake, or does that take place on Good Friday?

HI Deb

Yes that's Judas, and it takes place at midnight on Easter Saturday - wonderful atmosphere and then everyone goes off to Church afterwards :-)

I would love to see that, maybe one year, it makes Easter in England seem very boring. I wish we celebrated it like many of the European countries do, after all it is considered to be the most imprtant Christian festival.

We enjoyed Easter in Lindos, one year, but it would be great to see Easter in Ag. Nic or Elounda.
