Going to Gouve for two weeks but have we made a mistake

We are booked to stay in Gouve in May but the more I read the more concerned I become.

"Mainly English and Irish bars and taverna" I read, but that's REALLY not what we want. We would like to explore Greece while in Greece!! We will be using public transport. Can you please recommend other accessible towns and villages that we could explore so we can really get a taste of the real thing with its culture, history and food etc.

Thanks very much

I'm not sure where you read that. There is, I think, just one English bar on the main street, plenty of good tavernas around, and if you want an authentic village experience, you only need to venture inland to Pano Gouves about 2km away.

If you tell me where you are staying, I can recommend some places to you.

Thats more encouraging thanks! We are in self catering apartment in Gouve and simply want to explore as much as we can on foot and bus to see Cretan surroundings and life.

There are quite a few small villages inland within a few km of Gouves, especially inland from Gournes and Kokkini Hani, depending on how far you are willing to walk, and whether you want to get a short bus ride first. In May it should be perfect as far as walking weather goes.

Nowhere in Gouves is more than 15 minutes walk from the old highway, and many places are much less. From there you can get regular buses (every 30 minutes in May I think) to Heraklion one way and Hersonissos/Stalis/Malia the other. I suspect that Hersonissos/Stalis etc may not be to your taste (but no harm in having a look, particularly at Hersonissos water front and harbour, and Stalis beach) - and incidentally they are all far, far more busy than Gouves . Less frequently, probably hourly or so, there are also buses to Agios Nkolaos.

Some photos here:

About 12 inland, starting at Pano (old) Gouves and up the 'mouse-ears' mountain:

and a couple of Gouves beaches:

and one of the small chapel on the seafront, where you may be lucky enough to see a wedding:
