Holiday in October

I am thinking of taking my husband to Elounda in Crete on the 16th October 2014 for two weeks and was just wondering what the weather would be like then and if many bars and restaurants would be open and also if the Samaria gorge will be okay to walk. There would be a group of six of us going and we are looking for somewhere pretty, traditional and with some nightlife, more along the lines of Greek nights and maybe some music, i believe Elounda is the perfect place to go but would like a little more information about it if possible. Thanks xx

HI there

The tourist season officially finishes at the end of October, so at this time of year some places are starting to wind down ready for the end of the season, often it depends on that particular year, as to how many tourists are staying in the village as to when they officially close down. But you will still find plenty of tavernas and bars open and yes Elounda does sound perfect for you all......and if you did want a change of scene one night then you can always travel into the Greek town of Agios Nikolaos which is only 10 mins away. Agios is open all year round as its not just a tourist destination, so still plenty going on there too, and a large choice of tavernas too.

Weather wise its always difficult to predict at the start and end of the season, over the last 3/.4 years the weather has been lovely, but I have known it to rain and be cold too....so do be prepared for cooler evenings, so take a light jacket, although you will still be able to sit outside....and it could be cloudy or you could a day of rain too, the sea will still be warm :-) The start and the end of seasons are my favorite times to visit Crete, and great for traveling around too.

With regards the Samaria gorge - yes it will be open still, but do be aware that its a long drive away from Elounda, you are looking around 4 hours drive each way....they do have organised trips from both Elounda and Agios to the gorge, they leave around 5.00 am and you wouldn't get back until around midnight, so a long long day, but doable. As you are staying two weeks and if you are intending to drive you could always stay the night that end of the island, at this time of the year you wont have to pre-book accommodation and cost wise you are looking around 30 euros for a double room, so may be worth thinking about ??

If you need any other information then do just ask.

Hi April,

October is a lovely time to visit Crete as quieter and cooler than summer. We were in Rethymnon at end Oct 2013 and Elounda in Oct 2011. Weather was warm and sunny with temps 20-25 during day going cooler at night, certainly warm enough for t-shirt and shorts or sunbathing, BUT you may get some rain, so if you go prepared and don't expect wall-to-wall sun you will be fine.

Elounda is a very pretty village with lots of taverna (more than enough for a different one every night). It is busier during day with people visiting Spinalonga island, but by evening it is just locals and people staying in the village or nearby. We will be back for third visit in September.

October is end of main holiday season, so things will be winding down and some taverna may have closed for winter. Be aware that last week in October is school half term, so flights home that week will be full with tourists and reps returning to UK. Also 28th Oct is Ochi Day, a national holiday in Crete with parades for local school children.

Samaria Gorge is just about opposite end of Crete from Elounda, so as MG says would be a very long day trip. Suggest you stay a couple of days on west side of island to reduce travelling as I understand that walking the Gorge itself can be strenuous.

Hope this helps and please come back if you have any more questions.

Nic :-)

We've been twice in October and loved it, although the weather was mixed. The sea is still warm enough for swimming at that time of year, but do be prepared for heavy rain or storms as well as sunshine.

Samaria Gorge closes once the autumn rains make it too dangerous, and this can happen earlier than your planned visit, so don't count on being able to do it.
