hi every one we are now looking at crete but which resort here we go .......... we are in our 60s we would like a nice sandy beach some where to have a walk in the evenings and have a drink and not a long journey time from the airport any help would be very much appriaciated .............

Your wish list is much the same as ours was. We decided on flying to Chania (Ryanair from East Midlands) and spending our first 4 days at Kato Stalos which seems to have a decent beach and enough restaurants to keep us satisfied, and our last 3 nights in Chania. Its our first time to Crete so others on TA are probably better qualified than us to answer your question.

Crete is a large island with two international airports. Chania serves the west and Iraklion, the capital, serves the centre and east of the island. You need to see whether you can get flights to Chania from your local airport if that's where you want to go as not all airports offer this, most fly to Iraklion.
If you do fly to Iraklion, then look at Stalis which has all you need and is just 25 kms from the airport, it has a superb beach, loads to see and do, plenty of bars, shops and restaurants and sits on the main north coast bus routes making it easy to get around.
