Days Out from Agios Nikolaos

I'm looking for sugesstions for a few days out by car. We will be based in Agios Nikolaos and have so far have Elouda and Vai on the list. Any additional suggestions welcomed. Preferences would be for good beaches / scenic drives where we could stop off to admire the views. Would prefer to to drive for more than 2 hours on the outward trip

Many thanks

Vai is very overrated, it's reputation is due to its small grove of palm trees but nowadays, at least in high season, the beach is crammed with sunbeds and filled with coach parties. Much better to go a bit further along the same road to the gorgeous beaches of Itanos complete with an unfenced archaeological site you can wander around, white sand, palm trees and very few people. There are no facilities so take plenty of water and a picnic. cretanbeaches.com/Beaches/…

On the way, stop off in Sitia which is a very charming harbour town with many seaside tavernas and a good small museum.

You can also stop off at Toplou monastery with fabulous views from the road leading up to it.

The village of Kritsa is about half an hour from Ag Nik by car, well worth a visit. A very picturesque village with loads of local craft shops. You could then drive out through the back of Kritsa to the Katharo Plateau, a fantastic mountain drive through twisting switchbacks and cool mountain air. The views are breathtaking. The road starts off very rough but it does get better. The higher you go the greener the scenery gets. Near the top, just before a sharp left hander there is a lay-by in the trees, here you will find an ancient path that can be walked in either direction.

Once on the plateau you can have some fresh food at the Taverna or take a walk. On the other side of the plateau there is a dirt track that leads to the Lasithi plateau, it's not easy to drive at this point unless you have a 4x4 and a steady nerve. I did it once, many years ago when a bit younger and more reckless. The car hire companies probably wouldn't like you to drive this track these days so it might be best to park up and walk some of the way, just to get the views.

.....a nice day out.

First drive to Ierapetra, take a coffee break at this working city. Continue to Mirtos, a lovely small village. Take the (good) dirt road to Tertsa and have a lovely lunch at Lambros Taverne. It's on a nice beach and you will have free chairs etc. if you had a lunch.

We loved this trip just as we loved the trip GB just described.

Enjoy your stay in Agios Nikolaos, it's a nice village.

Similar to post 5......visit the ancient city of Lato, then take the road out of Kritsa to the Katharo Plateau before returning to Kritsa for a wander round a lovely village :-)

p.s. we did this as a day out in July starting with a walk round Ag Nik here's a few pics to give you an idea flickr.com/photos/…

David

We visited Plaka last week because my wife wanted to visit Spinalonga. The pay-off for the kids for spending holiday time at a former leper colony was that we would visit an area that had been recommended by the car rental guy as having great beaches. We found Voulisma beach by accident and absolutely loved it. The sand and watre are just beautiful. We parked easily (free) and walked down a few steps to the beach. Sun loungers are €2.50 (not sure about umbrellas as we had natural shade from the cliff). The guy selling the tickets told our 13 year old daughter "you don't have to pay or your sister" which I thought was really kind. The beach is signposted just after you pass through Istro.
