Yakinthos hotel, aggi apostoli or Althea village Kato Darats

Just weighing up 2 hotels for 1st week in October. Never been to Crete before. We would want to catch the bus into Chania town and get the buses to various villages/beaches, do the Samaria Gorge and do some walking along the bays if possible. Not lay around types but an hour or so by a pool at the end of the day is nice. Which would have the best village feel at night? We'd want to go into Chania a few evenings but if there's any beachside tavernas in either place it'd be lovely in an evening. Like a few drinks and to listen to Greek music but not into clubbing. Thanks for any help in deciding, both hotels get good reviews.

Unfortunately neither will have a "villagey" feel. They are either side of the main Chania - Kissamos road which takes the traffic to the Kato Stalos to Platanias strip resort. There are a couple of beachside places if you walk along into Kalamaki. If you walk down towards the beach then northwards olong the beach there are some restaurants by the beach, at the end the Golden Bay hotel has a bar above th beach which is a nice spot from which to watch the sunset over a Campari (well that's what I like). For proper village feel get a taxi up to Galatas, in Uncles taverna you can get a good cheap local meal while the locals have intense political meeting with the "Papas". walking back is downhill and ok if you take a good torch. If you go into town "To Xani" next to the synagogue is nicely open aired and Dimitri usually has musicians playing. Portes is still my favourite and villagey, if that means a continuous stream of foot traffic passing through. if you go give our love to Susanne.

Just up the road from Althea village, before the centre of Galatas is Elia restaurant, the cheapest and best restaurant in all the area, in my opinion. 400gr of fresh fish is 10 euro, the cheapest restaurant that I know, grilled on charcoal. Many traditional recipies too, and if you have a request, they can prepare it for you if you tell them 1-2 days in advance.
