5 Days in Chania

My wife and I will be staying in Chania Town from July 24th to the 29th. We will have a car. Can anyone suggest things to do and places to see...? We are happy to drive 50 or so miles in either direction. Thanks...

Having your own car I suggest every day you drive to a different beach and night time you visit the old town and the old port. Visit Elafonisi beach Ballos lagoon Palaiochora beach Falasarna beach. Go to omalos plateau up at the white mountains. This way you will see practically the whole place and every evening you relax at the magical old town at the old port where you can sit and have you dinner or coffee or ouzo. there are so many places you can do that. One Night you can drive to Therisso village 10km for dinner if you think you had to much of the old town.

Don't miss Stavros or Marathi, 12km from Chania. Very beautiful beaches and always calm waters even when the wind blows. July-august: big chance of very strong wind!

Drive out onto the Akrotiri peninsula to visit the three monasteries: AgiaTriada, Gouverneto, and Katholiko.

You can drive to Gouverneto (the Explore Crete link I've given you explains how) but it's nicer to walk - and you have to walk to Katholiko.

You could also visit ancient Aptera:

These are both short drives, which combined with walking and sightseeing, make good half day trips.

Further afield, but still within your 50-mile limit, are the villages of the south coast: Chora Sfakion, from where you can take the coastal ferry, also spectacular, to Loutro and if you wish to go further, to Agia Roumeli (from the latter you could walk part of the way up the Samaria Gorge); Sougia, a small, friendly village with an enormous beach and excellent swimming in the Libyan Sea; or Paleochora, a large-ish village with two beaches. It takes about 1.5 hours to drive to Chora Sfakion or Paleochora, 2 hours to drive to Sougia (it's no further than the other two, but the road is older and twistier.)

All three roads offer lovely views in beautiful countryside; the drive to Chora Sfakion, through and around the mountains, is spectacular.

You aren't going to run out of things to do and places to visit near Chania, and you'll wish you had more time there.
