1. Re: places to stay

I would recommend the olive grove apartments or the irene apartments..both are close to the village centre woithout it being noisey.. also close to the beach... Both are with Kosmar.. Loads of wonderful restaurant / taverna.. you may wish to look at elounda77.net or the new replacement site of www.makeitgreece.net many regular visitors and locals use these sites.....October weather... some people have experience very good weather ... my last trip at this time of year (which was in the 80's) was not good.... I generally go july now but thats due to school hols.. when ever you go or wherever you stay I am sure you will love Elounda....

We've stayed in Kalo Chorio in Istron Several times & find it very relaxing. If you look on the net for places to stay in Istron you will find plenty of apartments for rent there. The big hotels/ the Istron Bay Hotel is all inclusive & the Elpida Hotel we have stayed at 3 times in the past has now gone all Inclusive. We now stay with friends every October in Istron & looking on the net, nice apartments are about 35 Euros a night.

The weather is generally good in October but in saying that we did have 3 days of rain in October 2006 which was most unusual.

Istron has about 6/8 Tavernas a Bakery and a few shops & 3/4 small supermarkets where you can buy all the shopping that you would need.

These are spread out over about 1 mile.

There is a golden beach there which is on the main road.

There are also 2 more pebble beaches were we go regular to swim & sun bathe. These are a nice 15 minute stroll through the ollive groves & are very secluded.

The nearest town is Agios Nikolaos, about 7 mles from Istron & a very good & cheap bus service, about 1 every hour.

If you decide on Istron for your Hols We reccomend that you try Nikos Taverna which is oppasite the Elpida Hotel,& Kavos Taverna which is oppasite the golden beach at the other end of Istron.

There are other good Tavernas there to.The hospitality is next to none.

We now hire a car every year as there are so many buitiful drives around to see.

The journey from Heraklion to Istron is under the hour by car & a little longer if your on a bus transfer.

If you decide on Istron & have a car be sure to take the old road out of Istron for the village of Kalo Chorio & the mountain road to Eirapetra Via Prina & Kalamafka. The veiws will take your breath away. There are plenty more outstanding routes to take.

Driving in October is Quite pleasant as most of the tourists have gone home by now,Just be aware that you will still meet the odd cement lorry and or the local farmers over the mountain roads but they are generally curtious

We are out there again the first 2 weeks of October 2007,who knows we might even bump into you

Good luck & We hope you find what your looking for,& hope you find this helpfull.
