Traveling to Elounda Middle of May

We will be in Elounda the middle of May. Where are great places to eat in Elounda and Agios Nicholaos? Where do the locals dine? Also, places to shop that are not tourist traps. Where and what should we avoid?

Daisy.. what a lovely time of year to be visiting... wont be busy though.. so just take your time and wander... greek tend not to eat until late evening... but I would recommnd.. after visiting since '82... marilena (on road to plaka) mellissos on road to the causeway) makreis (in the square)

Have wander around Plaka.. bit this has grown over the past few years and isnt the lovely little backwood it used to be.. but still nice for lunch..

Have a greta holiday..

Hi there

Basically, avoid the restaurants that line the harbour and waterfront - they charge for the view and most cater for typical tourist fare of bland, uninspiring, and not-very-Greek food. DEFINATELY avoid ANY place that employs touts to get you inside - if the food was any good, they wouldn't have a job. Also, give a wide berth to anywhere that has full colour photo menus outside, they will invariably serve chips-with-everything.

To find where the locals eat, search out the tavernas in the side streets and alleys where the customers are speaking Greek as well as the staff. Everywhere posts it's menu/tariff outside so take a look and if you feel it's not for you, then just move on to the next place.

Be careful if ordering fresh fish - it's sold by uncooked weight and can be expensive and be aware that in Greece, food is rarely served piping hot as the locals prefer it a little cooler to "aid digestion".

My husband and I have been going to Elounda now for several years and is like a second home everyone really friendly and have made good greek friends we are also going out in May, we like Megaro restuarent the owner Dimetri is lovely it is just next to Bar 74 looking out to the sea also, Pelagos in Agios is really nice but a bit more expensive than in Elounda but food lovely when you come off the bus in Agios there is a taxi rank to your right which goes up a steep hill go to the top of the hill and turn left and you will see Pelagos all the locals eat here.
