My mouth is watering reading this and its about 10 months until we're back in Elounda. I also like the savoury pancakes from Frescos - peppers, ham, cheese etc. A nice take out and you can have a couple of tins of lager whilst they cook them for you.

Now i'm starving. And sad.

An extract from my review of Stam Stam in Sissi

"For those unlucky souls who have not yet sampled the delights of Gyros Pita banish the unpleasant thoughts of the Doner Kebab available here in the UK.

Layer upon layer of seasoned pork shoulder thread onto a huge Kebab turned slowly in front of searing heat (the only similarity to Doner) producing the most succulent tasty meat.

This is served enclosed in flat Greek pita bread (not the Cypriot pocket type) with tomato, tzatziki and rather perversely a few chips. A wonderful lunch costing less than 3 euro!"

It has to be said that gyros can differ greatly, they are not all the same. Some places marinate the meat themselves and make the huge 'kebab' others buy the huge 'kebab' in, frozen, and just cook the meat. Same with the chips that often come with it, some use fresh some use frozen.

The food in Greece, like everywhere else in the world, is becoming increasingly processed. Many tavernas now buy in huge containers of dips like tzatziki for eg instead of making it themselves.
