We stayed in the Ideon Hotel in the old town, whilst it is a 15 minute walk to the beach there is a greater selection of restaurants, bars and shops in the old town.

When you like strolling and eating out than choose a hotel in town, like Ideon, Kriti beach, Olympic Paladium, Jo Ann Palast or Brascos. They are all on walking distance from the nice venetian town. Platanes is a nice beach resort with many nice bars and restaurants. English tourist meet in The Terace, JJ's or Eyes bar disco. Cretan evenings in The White Lady over the bridge in Adele

I am not interested in a blackpol in the sun type holiday. Will get a car and travel around but for a base, looking for nice base, don't mind a walk to a nice beach by day and at night like to wander the streets, eat out in nice greek restaurants and have a few drinks.

Why do people stay in Plantane rather than Rethymnon town?

because Platanes is nice for beach holidays and going out and of course here you can also start with traveling in your rental car, this is mostly the problem in the old city, no parking space

There is a great beach 15 minutes from the old town and there is parking in front of the Ideon.

I would suggest you stay close to Rethymnon. Platates is a touristy commercialised resort that has no Greek authenticity. We have recently returned from staying at Platanes and although our accommodation was good, we went into Rethymnon every night. The beaches are long with rows of sunbeds. There is however, lots of lovely places to visit. A car would be beneficial and a good guidebook is invaluable. Top 10 Crete is a good one.

Just came back from a week in Crete based on Rethymno. I found Rethymno to be an amazing base for traveling around Crete given its rather central location between Hania and Irakleon. Stayed at the wonderfully located Ideon Hotel (tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g189421-d2…) which is just around the Old Town so once you done with driving around and seeing the sights, everything is just within walking distance.. Enjoy your stay in Crete.
