Mili Gorge

We will be in Rethymnon at the beginning of May. We would like to hike along the Mili Gorge, but we do not have our own transportation and would prefer not to join a group. Is there public transportation from Rethymnon to the beginning of the trail? Is the trail clearly marked? Where does the trail end, and is there transportation available back to Rethymnon? Thank you for any advice you can provide on this topic.

I did this walk with friends a few years ago: it's beautiful, and you should certainly do it.

There may be a local bus - there wasn't when we did it, but you can check when you get to Rethymnon. If not, you'll need a taxi to take you to the start of the path at Chromastiri: it's not far, and won't be expensive. As I remember the path was easy to find.

You'll emerge at the coast a few km east of Rethymnon, and can get a taxi back to town from there - or walk. It's not a very long walk - a couple of hours, and very nice.

At the beginning of May it may still be a bit muddy after the winter rains.

I think there is a 'bus-train' going there, but maybe not at the beginning of May.

After you walk the gorge, you can also take the suburban buses back to Rethymnon.

i don't know if this is lost in the translation, but I would not call it a 'hike'. It is a simple walk. If you want a more difficult walk, try Prasannos a few km east. But in early May you may find some water in the narrowest parts.

It's a beautiful walk/hike and of what I remember finding your way is very easy. I can't recollect how I got there.

Steve, people on the other side of the pond (I know, I was once one of them) don't talk of "walks". Any walk in the country is a hike. :-)

Yes, I should have said the local bus is an option for returning to Rethymnon, and if a bus is due reasonably soon of course that is the best option. When I did it, there was going to be a wait for the bus, and the taxi fare for the short trip (I can't remember what it was) split between the three of us was probably no more expensive than the bus.

Thanks for the tip, Alabastron, I always think of a hike as being a 10+ mile walk up a big hill!

Steve.

just take a taxi to the start and when you come out of the gorge you are almost back in Rethymno, so you pay only 1 taxi to go about 12 euro from Rethymno center
