Cyclades Itinerary for three weeks in June 2014

I would appreciate suggestions for a workable three week trip for end of August or just September in 2014. Flying into Mykonos. We visited Naxos.Paros Ios in 1971 and 72 . We like the idea of mixing and matching places so small islands would be great too. We prefer flying dolphins but if it is windy is June a better bet so fewer cancellations of ferries and dolphins ? We again are happy to stay in budget and a few luxury boutique type of places during the trip and we like a pool .We usually hire scooters or a motorbike and go to beaches that way. A suggestion for time to be spent in each place would be helpful . We just returned from a three week trip to Spetses,Poros, Aegina and Angistri and it worked well . Aegina was filthy and had lots of uncollected rubbish unlike the other pristine places. Poros to Angistri was nearly a problem as there were no timetables until the last minute but we were travelling on a Saturday by luck and it was possible. I don't want to make that sort of error in 2014 in ignorance of routes and connections. Many thanks.

There are no flying dolphins in the Cyclades. Ferries are a mixture of conventional vessels and catamarans, the latter both car-carrying (highspeeds) and smaller passenger-only (sea jets and flying cats). As seas can be rough in the Cyclades it's best to avoid the smaller ones when possible, but over three weeks you will need to use them at times.

To learn the routes, suggest picking up a copy of "Greek Island Hopping" which has annual additions. The guidebook has maps of the routes and good descriptions of each island. There are timetables at the back, but these should be used with caution, as they change from year to year. End of August to beginning of September is a good time for ferry travel, as it's past high season but ferries still on the full summer schedule.

You will find it difficult to complete your planning until all the ferry timetables are out late next spring.

You may search 2013 August and September ferry timetables as a rough guide to ferry travel in 2014

www.gtp.gr

www.openseas.gr

It should give you an idea what is available and between which islands. Many daily connections usually indicate that is one of the main routes and you can count on it in 2014 as well. If you cannot find any connections at all between some islands do not expect them to be connected in 2014. They may because each year ferry routes are modified a bit, but it is no wise to plan anything you won't be able to cancel like booking non refundable accommodation.

We have been in the Cyclades since August 28th and are now on Paros. There was heavy rain for an hour or two this morning but this was the first rain we have had for the whole time we have been here. The weather has been superb throughout. It has not been windy - there have been many calm days - more than half I would say. But this weather is not always guaranteed.

It is just such a great time of year to visit the Cyclades. Not only is the weather good, but accommodation prices are much cheaper. For instance, we paid 30 Euros a night at Island House on Ios with a pool and a lovely studio.

I would recommend Koufonissi for a nice and quiet part of your trip combined with crystal clear waters.
