10 days in June--Milos, Sifnos and Naxos?

We're an American family of 5 (kids 12, 14 and 16) planning a 3 week trip to Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Greece the first 3 weeks of June. Our dates are still flexible since we haven't booked anything yet, but I like the idea of beating some of the summer crowds. I've been reading and reading and think that we might fly into Athens and then split 10 days or so among Milos, Sifnos and Naxos. Our family likes lots to do--swimming, snorkeling, hiking, exploring, learning about the history and culture, etc. We don't want super touristy places, but we do want some shopping and good places to eat. Do these 3 islands seem like good choices for us? I know I haven't given you a budget, but I honestly don't know yet. We're not looking for luxury, but we do want clean and comfortable accommodations (w/ air conditioning!). Any suggestions for planning our trip would be welcome. Thanks!

Milos and Sifnos are on a different ferry route than Naxos and at the moment the only direct connection exists from 20 May to 5 June. If you are planning to travel after this date, you will have to go via another island (Paros, Santorini). Generally not a big problem but you will lose all day to travel.

IMO Naxos needs at least 4 nights just for aquick look, so may be it would be better to concentrate in Sifnos and Milos , if you want a third one Serifos. They are in the same route , one hour from each other, small and easy to explore.Another idea would be to go in Naxos and from there to spent 2-3 days in one f the islands that belond to "mikres cyclades", very small islands (koufonissia, donousa etc) with some of the most beautiful beaches.

Now we're thinking we want to add Santorini to the list because even though it's more commercial and expensive, it just appears to be so uniquely beautiful. Plus it might be a nice contrast to a couple of quieter islands, especially for my kids. It looks like there is ferry service between Santorini and Milos. Maybe we drop Naxos and just do Santorini, Milos and Sifnos? Any thoughts on that?

That combination is good, as is any combination that would include Naxos. They're all excellent islands to visit.

Santorini is worth seeing for the spectacular scenery, particularly the caldera views since you're so many hundreds of feet above the sea on that side of the island, and you won't get that perspective anywhere else.

Milos has amazing coastal scenery, but to get the most of it you have to take one of the tour boat or sailboat excursions that goes either part way or all the way around the island. Milos also boasts a variety of stunning beaches, everything from your "regular" sweeping stretches of soft sand to the lunar-like rock formations of Sarakiniko. It, too, has several interesting villages to visit.

Sifnos has interesting scenery as well as a variety of villages all worth visiting.

Plenty of things to see and do on all three islands -- if anything, your problem will be not having anywhere near enough time to see each of them to the fullest!

Santorini is a hub between the central Cyclades and western Cyclades ferry routes, so starting from there you could go either in the Naxos or Milos direction. Adding Sifnos would work well, because along with Milos it is on the western Cyclades route, and on the way back to Athens.

I think first time visitors to the Greek islands will want to include Santorini. As mentioned be sure to get a caldera view hotel. If a hotel is advertising sea view there is a very good chance that is not Caldera view. Be prepared to pay a high price on Santorini but it is worth it.

After Santorini you can head to Naxos it is an easy 3 hour ferry ride and is a good companion island to Santorini but far less expensive.

While Milos is a good choice the season doesn't really start there until June 20. We have been there in mid June twice and it was very quiet. Naxos on the other hand will have enough tourists around to make it interesting. Another consideration, the ferrys from Milos to Athens depart in the late afternoon and don't arrive back in Athens until 10 o'clock.

Here are images of Naxos and Milos perhaps they will help you decide.

Whatever you decide to do you have chosen very good islands.
