Ferry vs Flight Mykonos to Athens

Hi all

We need to get from Mykonos to Italy on the 10th June 2012 - from the look of it we have two main options, Rome or Venice. I have found flights from Mykonos to either Rome or Venice (stopping in Athens) for $388 for 2 pax, however if we were to fly to Rome from Athens the cost would be $94 for two people.

The question is, is it worth the cost saving to do the Mykonos/Athens leg by ferry, taking into account the extra hassle of getting from the port to the airport. I'm not too bothered by the extra travel time - we have four nights in Mykonos so can either take the ferry from Mykonos to Athens, or spend one night in Paros on the way to Athens.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Thanks!

Easyjet do Mykonos > Milan currently for 107 Euros (134 AUD) on the 9 June.

There are slow cheaper ferries from Mykonos to Rafina and a Bus direct to Athens airport in 45 min, so it's quite easy in principle.

Misses Athens/Piraeus area entirely.

You should also consider Olympic's discounted prices: the flight Mykonos-Athens costs 38 EUR (including fees and taxes).

6/10:

9.55-10.35, 14.30-15.05: 38 EUR

Thanks for your feedback

I just checked the Olympic flights, the cheapest on June 10th is €88 per person + taxes.

Does anyone know when the ferry schedules for this period are likely to be released so I can compare travel time & fares?

In terms of travel times and fares I don't think they will be significantly different from last year's. Fast ferry (Hellenic Seaways Highspeed, Aegean Speedlines Speedrunner) from Mykonos to Piraeus take about 3h20m and cost in the range of 50-60e pp/one way/economy class. Slower ferry (Blue Star Ithaki) are cheaper, ca 35e but take much longer, approx 6h as it goes via Tinos and Syros. Fast ferries (Flying Cat, Seajets) to Rafina cost about the same as those to Piraeus (55e) but journey times are shorter (just over 2h). Slower ferries to Rafina (Theologos P, Penelope A) cost around 26e but take over 4h.

The times for Seajet 2 have already been published. It gets to Rafina about 14:00. There won't be a fast catamaran that gets there much earlier than that as they all start from Rafina and go out and back. There may be a slow ferry leaving Mykonos about 07:30 or 08:00 but it will 12:00 or after when it arrives in Rafina. Allowing for it being a bit late and the transfer time to the airport, you are not going to catch any flight out of Athens before 15:00 at the earliest unless you either fly to Athens or you stay overnight in the Rafina area.

You can go to http://www.gtp.gr/ and then to the indidual ferry companies for current costs and timings to Rafina or Piraeus. Times for June will be rather similar just at each time double the number of ferries and possibly later in the day ones.

The earliest times don't change because they originate on the mainland early morning and return.

I am looking at a flight from Athens to Rome, departing Athens at 1.15pm - is there a ferry leaving Mykonos or Paros that would get us to Athens in time for the flight, or would we need to head to Athens a day earlier?

No ferry from Paros nor Mykonos will get you to Athens for that flight. You need to go the day before.
