Early Season...Openings

Hello,

My extended family and I (ages 6 - 62) will be arriving in Naxos on Friday May 3rd and leaving May 9th. I was wondering if there will be many tavernas still closed? Also, if it is beach weather, (I understand the water will be cold) will there be umbrella + chair rentals this early in the season?

We were looking into staying in Agios Prokopos but began thinking that St. Georges area might have more open restaurants, etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

Tavernas will be open in Naxos town with lots of choice. Most of the hotels at St George will also be open. There will be a few chair umbrella rentals but that will not be in full operation. You probably will have to look for one of the beach bars to find that service.

It is still early season so the closer to Naxos town/St George you are the more services you will find open. You can still take the bus to Procopios on a day trip if you want a full beach day but I think St George is the place to be that early in the season

Be aware that you are coming at the Greek Easter celebrations. Many hotels will be full for the weekend. On Friday there will be churchbells tolling slowly in sorrow through the day and in the evening there are processions in town carrying the bier of Christ. On Saturday night at midnight there is a mass where they celebrate that "Christ is risen". Firworks and lit candles.

On Sunday they celebrate all over Greece with lamb on the spit, families and friends together, dancing etc. I know Naxos Resort usually has open for Easter meal and celebration on the Sunday.

Easter:

There will not be much beach activities - rather families and friends will be in the tavernas and cafès in town for reunions and chat.

You will have a great time experiencing the most important time in Greek Orthodox Church and the most important event in Greece as such.

St. George area is the best choice for the period you are coming for.

Earlier years the public bus service hasn't yet started to Ag. Prokopios>Ag. Anna>Plaka, before late May. If you go to Agia Anna (walk 6 km or taxi 10€), the taverna Ta Gorgona will be open, like it is all the rest of the year. They serve excellent and genuin Greek food.
