The highspeed ferry from Hellenic Seaways takes about 5 hours, the slower car ferry from Blue Star takes about 8 hours. Both depart from Piraeus, which is just a short ride from Athens by train from the Monastiraki Metro Station on the edge of the Plaka in Central Athens.
Flying takes about 45 minutes from Aegean or Olympic Airlines. Aegean has deeply discounted fares if there are any left when you need them. Both have internet purchase options with e-tickets.
If you want a glimpse of some of the other islands take the Blue Star car ferry. You'll be able to stand on deck and watch these islands during the approach and departure. Also, seeing Santorini for the first time from this ferry is unforgettable. But if time is a factor then by all means fly.
the timing of ferries is also a factor in my experience

I just flew to and from Santorini on Aegean - the flight was no more than 30 minutes and very smooth. Depends on your budget and your time available.
roughly how much are the flights?
It depends on whether or not you are lucky enough to find the discounted tickets for your travel dates. Those are as low as 39 euro each way, taxes included. Go to the Aegean website to see what's available.
I paid around 110 euros one way - expensive, but worth it for the convenience and speed. Compare it with the expense of the taxi or bus fare from Athens airport to Pireaus which takes over an hour, then the ferry fare.
i always find that airplane is the most relaxed way to get to the islands.
Ferries go to all islands, one route maybe 6 islands or more.
Takes 9hrs or 5hrs to Santorini from Piraeus depending on the ferry.
i think that you have all the information you need from above. i just wanted to say that if you are staying for a long peiod ,probably ferry is good idea.if your stay is for a few days, then don't waste any of your time.it is the perfect island.
