How many days Santorini

Hi there

We are looking at planning a trip next year to Santorini.

We will be in Greece for 2 weeks with charter flight. Had planned 3 nights in Santorini (Oia), 10 nights on another island we have already chosen, then of course 1 night before we fly home. We have decided Kamari for the last night as near to the airport for us.

I rang up regarding the first 3 nights and was told 3 nights is not really enough to see Santorini and we may regret not staying longer.

So thinking of maybe changing to 4 nights now.

Just wondered if anyone had any views on this.

Thanks :-)

Hello Marathon Lady,

Indeed 3 nights in Santorini are not enough to see the Island. A combination stay of 2 nights in a Hotel on the cliff and 3 nights in a Hotel on the beach (Kamari or Perissa) is the perfect in order to relax and see the whole Island..

It depends on factors that we don't have information on , to advise you

... What does "next year" mean? May? June? or the usual European mass-movement tour months of July/August? Makes a difference -- the early 2 months are nice; in the latter 2, Santorini can be a "zoo" unless you insulate ourself in a very pricey lodging...

... Who said you'd regret it? Someone who'd gone ONLY to Santorini, for a honeymoon? Or someone who has other island experience as a basis for comparison? Or was it your hotelier that wants to get you to lengthen your stay? Of course such a person would say you needed more time.

... How much does beach/swimming mean to you? Santorini beaches are so-so at best (black volcanic grit or red pebbles).

... How exhausted will you be, and do you just want to collapse in a chair somewhere? Santorini (since its main archeological sight of Akrotiri is closed) is mainly now about looking, looking, looking, at the caldera. THere is also the site of ancient Thira atop a cliff... I've hiked up there; it's a great view, but the rubble is unexplained and confusing even to an ruins-buff like myself. The caldera is a "must -see" if this is your first trip to greece, but after 2 days I and many others who are not honeymooners are ready to move on.

... What outdoor activities do you like? I'm guessing you're into running or at least hiking. Santorini is a barren rocky island that can be very hot to hike. In contrast, Naxos is very green, and its interior affords so many fascinating hikes that there are websites and books devoted to same.

-- Those are things I recommend you consider, and you have plenty of time to make up your mind. Enjoy your planning!

Thanks very much for the replies.

It has given us something to think about.

TravelerJan it will be September and yes I do do lots of running at home.

It was yes as you guessed the hotelier that said 3 nights is not enough !

Thanks so much for your help and yes the planning is good and really enjoy doing that.

We love Greece so much and the nicer the scenery and the less commercialised the better. Will give some thought to Naxos too.

Thanks again :-)

I think staying on Santorini for less than 4 full days is not going to give you enough time to enjoy it to its fullest. Part of the experience is being able to slow down and relax long enough to get in sync with the timelessness of the island, not just scratch the surface of it's ambience.

Go for the extra night, trust me Santorini will grow one you. Brotherleelove couldn't have put it better with his point about relaxing and having the island grow on you. I make more and more new friends every yr and now I see how people like brotherleelove can spend up to a month at a time on the island. During my last trip, my 3rd, I finally learned to relax. Let me tell you my pulse slowed down, the back loosened up and I felt ten yrs younger. It also gives the mind time to unwind.

I think it is more a question of, are you going to use a charter flight to Santorini again.

Santorini is a fairly good point to access 15 or so Cycladic islands. So if you envisage coming back again then it does not matter too much how many nights you stay initially, you can re-adjust on a later trip.

I would put all the nights in Santorini at the end. Go straight to Athinios from the airport and get the ferry to wherever you are going. You will save a day in transit. I found Fira town to be more convenient place to stay for the airport. The island bus goes hourly, and the taxi rank is near to the bus station.

Oia is OK for a daytrip but somewhat dull to stay there. A lot of people on packages regret even a week as some find they don't actually like Santorini very much, it has a rather specialised appeal.

Thanks for all replies.

Yes we will use Santorini again as a charter I am sure.

Last year we got scheduled to Athens then chose an Island nearby (Agistri) , this year we planned on doing the same and then go to Santorini or even get a flight from Athens buf found XL to be very reasonable in price and the added bonus of getting us there direct.

Will have a re think now about what we are doing, it has been great to get some views on itineray etc and gave us something to think about

The people on here are so helpful as always .

So looking forward to Santorini and unwinding :-)

When is Akrotiri scheduled to reopen?

We are looking at going there either June 2008, November 2008, or Easter 2009 (3-4 days after spending 5-6 days based in Athens).

Thoughts on this?

Unfortunately, there is no schedule...and any made in the past have not been adhered to so it's a question for many seeking a visit! Enjoy!
