Let's see if this passes first. With the current government's one seat parliamentary majority, internal dissent within the party, the party trailing in the polls, and continued rumors of early elections, it's quite possible this will merely remain talk.
I sincerely hope you're right, but I'm betting that the purchaser of that 1500 hectares on Ios is hoping you're wrong. No doubt other large tracts of land have also been targeted for this level of development.
I'm reminded of what happened to the Costa Del Sol in Spain. I went there a few years ago to see Torremolinos, and the whole coastline was completely unrecognizeable for all the huge condo complexes that had been built side-by-side. The development was so dense you couldn't even see the Mediterranean Sea from the highway.
This is horrible.. Where is the petition to stop this??
This is exactly why I dont holiday on the coast of Spain!!
Don't worry. It won't happen but even if the law is changed, the likelihood of big developments depends far too much on developers being able to get their hands on enough land. As most land is held in small chunks by property owners who either won't sell or will expect ludicrous prices, this is unlikely to happen. Then there is inherited land owned by a number of people who can't even agree what day of the week it is. Unless all of them agree to a sale, the land won't change hands.
So well stated Philhellene....There are a number of places I've taken note of in the Sporades..calling those numbers posted (painted) on the doors/walls only to find the usual minimal 7 brothers and sisters involved who inherited can't agree on anything! Long shot even if you're truly interested...Enjoy!
Hope this doesn't happen, I think they would be increadibly stupid to let this happen.
Please don't do it!!
