Flying from Santorini to Athens - Advice Needed

We have a 1:00 p.m. return flight from Athens to the U.S. on a Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in July. Here's the question: is it wise to take an early morning flight out of Santorini or is it best to fly back on friday. thanks.

Yes, I think so. Unless there's a high probability of strikes affecting the airports

(see: http://twitter.com/livingingreece),

a three hours slot is more than enough. Even if the plane from Santorini is one hour late (which is unlikely), you will still be able to catch the plane to US.

Best to fly back Friday. Just to be on the safe side.

Thanks! It would certainly be more fun to spend our last night in Greece in Santorini instead of hauling back to the airport and then staying in Athens. If the flight was cancelled, would we be able to catch a fast ferry early in the morning without advance reservations on a Saturday in July??

Hi Tinsey,

Thanks for your help. Are the flights from Santorini to Athens that unreliable?

If the flight is cancelled, you may be able to catch another flight the next day, if not you may be able to get the fast ferry in early July, maybe also in mid-late July. I think booking the night before is pretty safe, if ferries are running normally (i.e. no delays due to high winds etc.).

You don't have to stay in Athens proper, there are hotels close to the airport and even hotels by the sea - so you can finish your holiday in style ;-)

They aren't *that* unreliable, but it's a small airport and delays/cancellations can happen, plus there is no readily available alternative - if it's very windy and the fast boats don't run, you'll be well and truly stuck.

It all depends on how much of a disaster it would be to miss your flight home and how much risk you're willing to take. If you aren't able to reschedule your flight home at little/no cost, it's best to not take any chances. You asked about what's best, not what you can get away with ;-)

Thanks again, Tinsey. Are the flights jets or puddle jumpers? Would you recommend Aegean over Olympic? Any flight advice is appreciated.

The planes are large commuter jets. I also recommend that you don't wait until the last day to return to the mainland. Although flight cancellations don't happen very often, ask yourself if you can afford to pay for another flight home if you do miss yours.

Hi Brotherlee,

Thanks for your input. No, definitely can't afford to pay for additional flight expenses, so guess it's best to be smart and return back on Friday. Perhaps taking one of the high speed ferries into Piraeus might be better than flying. Then we could spend our last night in the city. (not that we couldn't if we flew) What would you do? thanks again for your helpfulness.

I'd fly. The highspeed ferries are smaller and more susceptible to breakdowns and if the seas are rough the ride would be miserable.
