7 guys island hopping. Advice for Santorini

Myself and 6 friends (all male, ages 23 - 25) are doing some island hopping from Corfu, to Mykonos, to Ios and then we plan to spend 2 nights in Santorini and then move onto a less commercial, scenic, 'party-with-the-locals' type of island in close proximity to the Cyclades. This will be over 3 weeks, between mid June and early July 2012. Could you please help me with these 3 Questions:

1. Santorini - obviously we are planning on partying a bit in Corfu, Myk and Ios. What will a group of guys like us be able to do in Santorini (we are also looking for a bit of down time). Is it worth staying 2 nights there. Shorter, Longer?

2. Any suggestions on where to stay for a group like ours. We are budgeting around 30 Euro per person per night. We aren't looking for anything too special - but wouldn't mind something different from a hostel.

3. Where might we be able to find a "less-commercial, scenic, party-with-the-locals" type of island to spend 4 or 5 nights? Does Folegandros suit this mold?

Thanks in advance for your help.

1. In my opinion you should spend at least three days on each of the islands. Checking out, getting to the port, the actual travel time, getting from the port, checking in, ... takes the best of the day.

2. You should stay at Kamari (or Perissa) - you'll be able to get a decent double room with a breakfast for 30-50 EUR/night. Kamari has a very nice pedestrian seafront with hundreds of bars and tavernas. Fira is just a short bus ride away.

3. Folegandros is a fantastic choice, however, it may be expensive and you do have to book your rooms well in advance. I also recommend Naxos (Ag. Georgios or Chora) or Paros (Naoussa). If you really want an authentic Greek 1960 experience, visit Kimolos or Sikinos (the islands are to die for, however, they may be too quiet for a group of guys).

Hi,

1. Santorini - You don't have to go there, don't feel pressured. I never went there on my first trip. It was Paros, Naxos, Ios in three weeks start/ending in Athens.

Dump Corfu, it wastes a lot of travelling time trying to combine it with the Cyclades islands.

2. You won't have to pay anything like that amount. More like 15 € each at the most maybe some more for overpriced Mykonos. Rooms are charged by room not per person, therefore if a place has maybe 3 bedded rooms you can strike a good deal.

3. Yes, Folegandros meets those requirements, though it is increasingly commercialised, now even sporting an American 'resort hotel'. Much less commercialised are even nearer Anafi, Sikinos.

Thank you for the feedback everyone.

To MarjanJerman - Kamari does look really good and reasonable. definitely better for us to stay there.

To Heimdall - we are looking at a flight from Corfu to Mykonos. Its 2h45m and costs $169. We are basically going to Corfu to stay at the Pink Palace Hostel for a few nights - on a few friends recommendations. We do realise it is out of the way, but we just decided to go for it. And it looks like best option (time and price) for getting to the Cyclades would be to fly to Mykonos.

To Retired _Hippy - Thanks for the advice on price expectations, we'll be sure to watch out for that.

And we'll be sure to look into Folegandros, Naxos, Paros, Anafi and Sikinos.

Thanks very much.

If you're looking into budget rooms, I can recommend the following:

On Mykonos:

www.drafaki.com

On Folegandros:

www.pavlosx2.com

On Anafi:

www.taplagia.gr

Double rooms at all these places will be about €30 per night. Drafaki has some larger rooms and apartments for larger groups so it will be even less per person.

I spent a few days on quiet Sikinos last year at Galini Apartments. The rooms are spacious, clean, cheap and have a view of the port and the open sea. In May I paid €15/night as a single. Those families with rooms will meet the boats. Loucas Rooms was twice the cost of Galini.

Hi once again everyone!

Still organising our trip and was wondering about hiring scooters on most of the islands in Greece (Corfu, Myk, Ios, Santorini) - would we require International drivers licenses?

And what can we expect to pay per day?

Cheers

Hi Simon,

Whether I've hired a car or scooter all I've ever needed was my UK driving licence and to show my passport on occasions.

So long since I've hired a scooter i can't give you any idea of price.

Cheers

Stu
