Donkey ride on santorini

Can anyone tell me about going up or going down by donkey back when we get to Santorini. I've been told to ride up but walk down, I've been told to do the exact opposite, and I've been told about a tram. Any consensus on the best way to do all that?

Wow. I guess I touched on a nerve. OK. I catch your drift and it is good to hear from so many who care about these animals. You have convinced me. We will ride the tram. Now that I have your attention, have any of you done the hike to Oia. How difficult is it and how close to the edge.My wife is scared of heights.

Thanks for all the info.

The trail is well-used, but rocky and and sometimes uneven. It follows along the cliff, so it gives the illusion of there being a sheer drop to the sea hundreds of feet below. It's not for the faint of heart. Once you leave Imerovigli the next place on the trail where you can call it quits is about 3 miles or so ahead where the trail re-emerges alongside the main road between Imerovigli and Oia. There's a small snack bar there and you can flag the bus down when it passes.
