1st time visit, where to stay

Hello, me and my partner want to visit Santorini for a weeks holiday but cant decide where to stay and totally confused. Cant decide whether to stay on the Caldera side or the side where the beach resorts are. Help!

If we stay on the Caldera side which resort would people recommend? Would like a resort that has some bars, shops & restaurants etc but not really busy. Also if we stay on the Caldera side and want to visit the beach resorts for a day on the beach how easy is it to get there?

If we stay on the side of the beach resorts which resort is best, Perissa or Kamari?

Thanks in advance.

Darren

On the caldera side you have a choice of -

Fira, the main town, manically busy, but at the centre of everything.

Firostefani, a little way up from Fira, quieter, easy to get to Fira, a compromise if you want to be near the action, but away from the madness of Fira. If you want to stay on the caldera side, based on what you've told us so far, I'd say this is your best option.

Imerovigli is about 1.5km away from Fira. The highest village, spectacular views, limited facilities, you'd probably need your own transport or expect to do a fair bit of walking.

Oia is the most beautiful village. Lots of top end hotels and restaurants, not much in the way of evening entertainment.

Kamari and Perissa are pretty similar with Kamari being more built up with more of a crammed in like sardines feel to it. Perissa is a lot more spaced out and laid back.

To get to the beaches, you'd have to get a bus from Fira. If you're in Oia, you need to get to Fira first then change for the Kamari or Perissa bus.

Calderra views without a doubt, but restaurants are more expensive as the views are wonderful. Kamari just another beach with no Santorin feel.

Stay away from Dana Villas well known for the weddings-solo traveller gets the worse rooms, lots of other smaller lovely places to stay. Simos tavern on main rd has views but mich cheaper and lovely staff

Hi,

If you were to stay in Oia you may pay more for your accommodation but I would strongly recommend that you ate at family run tavernas instead of the hyped up places. The food from the tavernas is just like you would get from a home where mum is a fantastic cook, there may not be a view but if your hotel has one you don't need that.

A holiday in Oia is different, you will find you don't need buzzing bars, a glass of wine or a beer while you wait for your food, a nice bottle with it and a little something after while you sit taking in the chilled out atmosphere, still yumming over the delicious lamb or meat balls you've just had. You will sit back in your seat and sigh 'ahhh this is the life' !!! I know 'cos we've just done it.

Regards

Just there and stayed in Firostefani; perfect choice for us. We stayed at Manos Small World and loved it. The rooms were anything but small and well laid out. No pool but the breakfast on the terrace each morning were amazing. Can check out more on tripadvisor ranking.

Thanks for all the responses. So it seems Firostefani is the best option. Does anyone know of any hotel recommendations? Preferably a hotel that has sea view rooms and maybe a small pool. Thanks.

Before we can give you any recommendations, we need to know the following -

1 - The dates you're planning to visit

2 - You're maximum nightly room budget - in € if possible - hotel rooms on Santorini range from the "reasonable" to the "how much!!!". Caldera views, with pools don't come cheap, so we really need to know how much you're prepared to pay.
