Private guide in Rhodes

We are planning to spend 4 days in Rhodes mid May 2012. Can somebody recommend a private guide? Where in Rhodes we would better to have a guide? We are staying in Lindos. Thanks!

Hi Lica,

If you are staying in Lindos why do you want a guide as it would cost you a fortune! If you're only there for 4 days you won't have that much time anyway. You can spend a day in Lindos visitng the Acropolis, the ancient Amphitheatre and the Church of the Panaghia (see my review on TA). Have a meal in one of the many restaurants - if you want to treat yourselves try Ambrosia as it's very good but a bit expensive.

You must visit Rhodes Old town and see the Palace of the Grand Masters, Street of the Knights of St John and the Grand Mosque. Have some lunch and then walk around Manraki Harbour. You can get a bus from Lindos for about €6 each way whereas a taxi would cost you €65 each way. In Lindos there are 2 travel agents who advertise tours of the Island for reasonable prices. I know it's by coach but it's far cheaper than a private tour.

Hope this helps

Dave

Thank you, Dave! I know it's luxury, but we like to learn about history and it's so much fun when somebody local tells you stories. Also, it's customized to our interests, as with organized tours they have too much stops at souvenir shops, which we don't care about. Our hotel offered us a guide for 250 euros a day. I wonder, if its a fair price.

Thank you for the restaurant recommendation! We love good restaurants! A

It's only 55 to town Dave, 65€ is the airport fare. 250 wow, that buys a good few guide books! Still It's your money and if you can afford it and It's how you enjoy your holiday, why not?

To be honest you sometimes find taxi drivers make a good guide and ask for no more than the fare. Some have great knowledge and pride of their island but It's all down to luck, you might have one that only says two words 'where to?'

Correct me if i am wrong, i'm pretty sure you have to have a licence to be a tour guide. Beware unlicenced guides!!...

It does take a certain personality to be a good guide, when I worked as a rep I came across all sorts, from the good to the bad and downright ugly. There are some that just send you to sleep and others that can keep your interest throughout. So I guess it can be relevant how much you pay in the end as to the quality. Also you would want to be sure they don't miss anything out for example "Ancient Ialyssos"

Trevor.. i do believe a private guide is what the OP was enquiring about, not an escort.
