Collapse of Russian tour operators

It has been announced that the tour operator Labitint has gone out of business. This was followed later by another company Intaer.

Last month 3 other Russian companies ceased trading.

All of this is very bad news for Rhodes & Greece.

There has been news regarding the Russian low-cost carrier being part of the international sanctions put on Russia because of their Crimean occupation and following support of Ukrainian rebels. The airline has been banned from operating within Europe (EU).

Is this Dobrolets, or has another airline suspended operations as well?

Five tour operators (just since mid July) and one airline.

The tour operators going under are bad news for parts of the Rhodes tourist industry, especially owners and staff of AI hotels. Equally bad news for Russians who have paid in advance for holidays that will never happen.

Is anyone actually stuck on Rhodes, or are the charter airlines at least taking them home again?

The airline that has stopped operating (Dobrolets) had just two planes and was targeted for sanctions because it was flying to Simferopol in what everyone outside Russia considers occupied Crimea. No flights to Greece at all.

The owner of the Mitsis hotel group has said any Russians in his hotels can complete their stay.

The Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (SETE) specifically requested that Greek tourist accommodations "continue to ensure the smooth hosting of Russian visitors...to preserve the positive image of Greek tourism" (that's a rough translation from a SETE press release).

SETE said it was hoping there would be quick clarification of whether there would be some form of insurance or other payments forthcoming to cover the remaining costs of the bookings for Russian travellers already in Greece.

Hopefully the hotels will fully recover the costs they incur on behalf of the guests caught up in this mess.
