Where to stay, car hire etc

Seriously thinking about a last-minute week in Kefalonia in June (first time there). Fancy a resort with good choice of bars & restaurants but not wall-to-wall karaoke/nightclubs. Also a decent beach would be preferred. Accom must have pool. We've looked at both Lixouri & Svoronata - any views or alternative suggestions?

We (couple in lively 50s) hate long airport transfers around numerous drop-offs, so anyone know what time car-hire pick up closes at airport (our flight is likely to land about 6pm)?

Or how much airport taxis might cost to the major resorts?

I can recommend skala. Really nice resort with plenty of choice for restaurants and a few bars.Sounds from what you say that it would suit. Retains a village atmosphere and has a lovely beach.

When we went we stayed in very basic accomodation but used the pool at the tara beach hotel which seemed a very nice place and would be happy to stay there. Ive also heard excellent reports on Hotel melidron which has its own pool.

Skala is a good resort but is right at the southern end of the island making for a fairly lengthy transfer. Our favorite resort for a bit of life without anything OTT is Lassi. It's just a 10-15 ride from the airport and has two of the best beaches on the island. There are plenty of decent restaurants and bars but no hooligans and nothing like the 18-30 crowd. The resort attracts all age groups and is only a 20 min walk from Argostoli (or 3 mins by bus/cab) which has good shopping and great markets down by the harbour for fish, meat, veg and fruit.

In the summer, the car hire desks will be open till sunset so you'll have no problem renting one during the evening. Having said that, you could take a cab from the airport to Lassi which won't cost much then sort a car out the following morning as there are several rental outfits in the town.

One point to bear in mind is that there are no bus services to the airport from Lassi so when it's time to go home, you'll have to take a cab.

Kefalonia is a dire choice for bars, but good for restaurants. Lixouri is downright ugly. Svoronata just too small.

The best would be Nea Skala in the south of the island or Argostoli/Lassi area, as previously mentioned. Nea Skala beach is poor shingle in the resort but does get sandier down the coast around to Mounda bay, by Katelios is gets worse again, can be a lot of seaweed.

Accomodation is quite difficult to find on arrival due to heavy package tourist presence but you can find gaps in bookings.

It just isn't a 'kareoke pub' type place at all so no need to worry.
