Help and Advise

we are four fit senior citizens considering changing our usual September holiday in Cyprus to visit Cephalonia, Would anyone be able to tell us

a) What sort of temperatures to expect

b) which part of the island to stay. (We like to be able to walk to eating places without using a car in the evenings)

c)General suitability of the island for an older person

We are in our early 60's and always feel very comfortable on the island, as do may other visitors in that age group. It is not a holiday destination for lager louts. September is a lovely month to visit with temperatures in the mid 20's plus. It is a month when it can rain, sometimes heavy thunderstorms. We have visited many times in September and always had rain at some point, but have gone home with a healthy tan. The earlier in the month you visit, the better.

As to where to stay you are spoiled for choice. Katelios is often called sleepy, with many excellent restaurants. Lassi is purpose built over a period of time with the best beaches on the island. It is also within walking distance of Agostoli , the capital of the island, which is very pleasant to walk round, and a good jumping off point for other walking destinations. Again there are excellent restaurants in both.

These are my favourite resorts, Sami, Aghia Efemia, Lourdas Scala and others all have their plus points.

If you are able to hire a car, do so, the island is so beautiful as you drive round.

Good luck with your choice !

Agree with all Barry s as said. Katelios as more character than Lasssi. We stay in Lourdas but its a steep walk upo from beach to some apartments depending if your apartments are down by beach or up in Vhalata.

Reccommend a car for a few days as the island is stunning and so much to see.

Hi jayfen,

I go along with most of what is said above although I do prefer Agia Efimia above the other resorts (it would be a boring forum if we all agreed all the time!). It would be difficult to find accommodation more than half a mile from the village centre.

I also suggest you hire a car for the duration collecting it from, and returning it to, the airport. That way you will save on taxi fares. For example airport to:- Lassi 15 -20 euros, Lourdas 30+, Katelios 40 -45, Agia Efimia 50 -55. Each way!

Look at local companies such as Venus car hire, Greekstones, Pefanis, cbr.

Happy planning

Hi Bob

Thanks for your reply. As I said we will definitely hire a car and your advise on companies to use is appreciated. We were thinking of looking for a villa in either Agia Efimia or Scala. When we holiday in Cyprus its always in the north west where it is less commercialised( Latchi area) In view of this do you think Agia Efimia or Scala would be "up our street" We like to be able to walk to a choice of taverna for our evening meal and do a bit of sightseeing during the day.

Look forward to hearing from you with any further tips you think relevant for our first visit to the island,

Although ee have't been to Cyprus for a few years, we have had many holidays in the Polis/Latchi area.

Think Agia Efmia would suit you more than Skala would

Hi again,

Yup! Agia Efimia would probably suit you best.

As for accommodation,

Cheap and cheerful studios about 50 metres from harbour look at Konstantinos Apartments

www.konstantinosapartments.com

If using a tour operator look at Manos (a subsidiary of Thomas Cook) and Myrtos Apartments (our favourite) about 50 metres up a steep hill and a further 100 metres from tavernas.

Waterside Apartments are about 200 metres from the tavernas and are great if you get a "sea view" studio. "Mountain view" apartments suffer from road noise for about 20 mins just after a ferry arrives in Sami with a lot of lorries!

Garden Villas get good reviews and are about 300 metres from the village centre but about 100 metres up a hill. The owner also owns a jewellery shop in the village.

www.ownersdirect.co.uk/greece/GR1257.htm

Gonatas Hotel is locally owned and is about 800 metres from centre. It is available through Manos (and other tour operators)

Odyssey Hotel is quite a new hotel and is about 600 metres from the centre

http://www.hotelodyssey.gr/

Kefalonia Bay Palace hotel is a new luxury hotel that is very impressive inside but is a bit of a blot on the landscape and looks international and not very Greek!

Have a look at this link also for info.

agnitravel.com/kefalonia_travel_guide/Kefalo…

If you find any other places in the village that appeal to you let us know and someone will have info and opinions about it.

Happy Planning

Thanks Bob.

We have found a couple of villas we like but not in this area, They are inland a bit, One in Metaxata one in Peratata and one in Kaligata, Do you know anything of these areas ?.

We will also look at all your suggestions in Agia Efimia as that is where we would really like to stay but we would like to have our own pool,

Thanks for your help and advise,

Hi,

I have never stayed in that part of the island but have driven around the Castle of St George area many times.

Peratata is near St Georges Castle which is well worth a visit (if it is open!) and also a set of Mycenae tombs as well as a museum of church artefacts rescued after the 1953 earthquake.

You would also be fairly near Argostoli and the resort of Lassi.

It is a nice drive from Peratata to the Monastery of St Gerasimo.

You are also only a short drive from three supermarkets (Lidl, AB and another with a long name beginning with M) but you can avoid them if you want!

Kaligata I know very little about but it is a couple of miles south of Peratata and not far from Metaxata where Lord Byron lived for some time

agni.gr/kefalonia_travel_guide/…

Both places are only about 20 mins from the airport once you know the way! They are not very far from several resorts on the South coast.
