car hire at argostoli port

Part of a cruise we are taking gets us to Argostoli port on 2nd June-we are very keen to go to Fiscardo and Assos and think the best way to do this may be to hire a car-do any of you out there have any tips-the companies that hire from the port seem very limited-any advice gratefully received !

Hi and welcome,

Have a look at these local companies that are all recommended by regular visitors to the island. At least one advertises as doing special deals for cruise passengers and some of the others have branches in Argostoli which is only a ten minute walk from where the cruise liners dock.

However, you have a problem.

There has been a major road closure on the road between Myrtos Beach and Assos. This road is very unlikely to be re-opened this year. If you google a map of Kefalonia, you will be able to see the diversion. From Argostoli you would need to drive to Divarata, just before Myrtos beach, cross the island to Agia Efimia on the East coast, drive over the mountains via Komitata and Karya. From there you could drive down to Assos and along to Fiscardo. The diversion from Divarata to Assos will take about an hour and you will have the same returning. The drive from the dock to Divarata is about 40 mins.

There are, as far as I can see three boats arriving in Argostoli that day so some will have to anchor off the harbour and ferry passengers ashore.

Which one are you on?

that should say 'advice'-thanks anyway Bob-I am questioning now whether we could really get to Assos, Fiscardo and back in the time we have-we are docked from 8am- 5pm-seems that at best it would be very whistle-stop. It will also be interesting to see what the cruise company do with their (overpriced) excursions to the North of the island bearing in mind the problem you have highlighted.

They would probably do Myrtos to look at and photograph the beach, onto Agia Efimia for coffee, Melissani cave.

There is a coach route over the mountains (but a taxi driver told me he doesn't recommend it to visitors) that would cut ten mins off my times.

With that amount of time you could do it. - (thinking out loud) disembark sign for car etc. leave 9:00 am. Reach Myrtos Beach 10:00. Agia 10:20 Assos 11:20. Leave Assos 12;00. Fiscardo 1:00pm Leave Fiscardo 2:00pm. slightly quicker route back to Agia Efimia 3:00pm Back in Argostoli 4:00 pm. Just about! No room for problems!

A good circular route to drive would be. Argostoli - Divarata - Agia Efimia - Sami (with perhaps a quick diversion to see Antisamos beach) - Summit of Mt Ainos - Argostoli

Really think this may be a lot to achieve in the day-we were not planning to stop at Myrtos-we were going straight to fiscardo, back to Assos and then return-obviously stopping at them for a period and lunch at one of them-but not sure how relaxing it will be wondering whether we will return on time! It is a shame as we have never visited the island and those two particular locations look lovely-perhaps we will stick around Argostoli ? That diversion looks tricky through the mountains

Decisions, decisions!!

You could either do the Agia Efimia, -Sami circle or walk round the headland to Lassi, have a swim and lunch, get a taxi back to Argostoli, look around and see about booking two weeks on the island later or next year!!

Just a note on Pefanis car hire - they just advised me that their minimum car rental is for 3 days. If you have any luck getting a one day rental, please post, as we are also looking for a one day rental....
