xi beach

He'lloall!

I'll be going to stay in skala this summer, visiting the island for the 6th time. Last year was the first time we rented a car and will do so again this year. Had no problems driving around but want to try and see some things I haven't before (have done a lot of coach trips).

I have visited xi beach once on a Thomson boat trip, remember it was lovely but that was 7 years ago now - is it worth the drive there? Have read quite a few negative reviews about it.

Any advise on the best route there? Also any other villages or spots that anyone would recommend that arent on the usual tourist route?

We drove up mount ainos last year highly recommend it :)

Hi terura,

We go to Kefalonia on average once a year. Sometimes we go twice, sometimes we miss a year.Every couple of years we go to Xi for an afternoon. In my opinion that's about what it is worth.

How about this for a day on the Paliki peninsula. :- Skala - Argostoli (outskirts) - take West coast road towards Fiscardo (but not very far!) - at Kontogourata turn left. - On the road round to the peninsula there is a right turn to Zola (worth a visit) there is another right turn further round just before Livadi that takes you North to Atheras Beach and West to Petani Beach. South of Petani Beach are lots of villages and towns, some with café/bars, that are worth a brief stop on your way down to Xi beach. Perhaps you won't even get there!

If you want to get the Ferry back to Argostoli rather than drive round then it leaves every hour on the hour during the week but on Holidays and Sundays (and I think Saturdays) it is alternate hours.

Bob

We love XI beach but went there last year and it was very commercialised compared to previous years with big floating bouncy castles and trampolines to be used by the hotel guests on the 'all inclusive packages' only, who were mainly Russian. (naturally no issue with this)

The kids were told off by someone on a jet-ski for swimming out and using the gear...

Still a lovely beach though but not quite as it was...

Thanks Bob, for the directions, I've never been to that side of the island so definitely will drive round to where you've suggested.

I suppose my problem is that we are only going for a week, having the car for 3 days, and this will probably be our last holiday in a while - I'm hesitant to waste time with the car going to a beach that may not be worth it. Though I have a few little stones from there that I sifted out of the sand and water (someone told me they are called madonnas eyes) and I'd quite like to get some more. But saying that I don't really enjoy commercialized beaches (hence why I stay in Skala)

Hesitant to attempt a ferry with a car too but I want to go around Ithaka so I'll have to be brave!

Hi again,

The ferry is a big boat. There is no trouble with it. If you are nervous about driving on to the boat, the crew will do it for you!

Hi there Terura.

I stayed at The Cephalonia Palace in Lixouri last year which is a couple of minute walk from XI beach.

I rented a car last year for a few days and tried to do as much of the Island that I could and to be honest, there are many other better beaches than XI. Its a nice enough beach but its a long way to travel from Skala for an ok beach.

I would agree with the route that Bob has suggested, Especially visiting Petani beach. I watched the sunset from there, it was just awesome. And the drive around Paliki peninsula is pretty cool too with lovely views.

:)

Can I ask some other questions. Can you recommend somewhere we can take our 10 and 8 year old girls to do some watersports, when they get tired of the villa pool. They like kayaking and maybe a ride on the donuts or banana boat. We are staying in Spartia - we don't really like commercialised beaches, but will make an exception when it comes to letting them have some fun, so any suggestions would be good. We have been there before and went out on a day cruise, from where we did see a beach that looked quite lively, but not sure where it was. Thanks, Katharine

Xi beach have jet skis and banana boats etc. as well as those pedalo thingamajigs...

Maybe if you do go over to Xi then make a day of it via the ferry, coming back for early dinner with the kids in Argostoli enroute back to Spartia.

We love Spartia by the way and our favourite beach is Klimatsias...SJL

Hi Kat,

Antisamos Beach has donuts and banana boats but only in the high season. There is also a great drive there if you go to Peratata and on to The Monastery of St Gerasimo by going round the back of St Georges Castle and taking the road through Demoutsanata. You can go into the monastery during the morning and see the Saint's casket. From here you go to the main Argostoli - Sami road and on to Sami. On the road to Antisamos Beach there is a turn off to the right to the Citadel of Ancient Sami and then on to Aghia Fanentes ruined monastery with a new church next door. The area was used in the filming of Captain Corelli's Mandolin.

The first taverna you come to on the beach is (was last few years) very good. The watersports are further round the beach. Take some stale bread or similar with you and scatter it around you when you are in the sea. You will be amazed at the speed with which the fish appear!

Went to xi yesterday a lot of the sand has moved, now below the tide mark. Probably due to the wind direction in the winter. Xi is a beach with red sandstone thats all, it will be a few years before we will look at it again. There are better beaches to see around the island.
