DIY hols to Kefalonia

Just got back from another fabulous holiday, struggling with post holiday blues to-day. We have never booked a holiday independently yet, but feel that this is the way to go now. We have found a place we would like to stay, been shown around etc and booking will be easy. So next question is 'what are the cheapest flights and when do we start looking for them. Also we would want car hire from and return to the airport. Any advice would be very helpful.

Hi eskimonell.

It took us quite a few years to escape the security of a tour operator. Now we always go independent unless we want one particular place that is tied to an operator from May until September.

First step is to find out how flexible the dates can be with your chosen accommodation. An extra day can save pounds on your flights.

Secondly it seems likely that your best airport will be, like us, Gatwick. Therefore keep looking out for when the cheap airlines from Gatwick release their flights. You can get on their alert list but I don't know how. Easyjet release next years flights in the early autumn. We found that one particular week it was cheapest to fly out on a Tuesday but cheapest to fly back on a Thursday. The saving in flight costs were more than the cost of the extra couple of days at our studio. Easyjets website is really easy to use.

Car hire is a doddle. Just email a few companies as soon as flights and accommodation are confirmed and even try a bit of haggling. Have a look at this link for good local companies

Go for it!

Hi eskimonell, we travel flight only & book studio directly with owners every year in Lassi. We book before we go each year & book flights as soon as they go on sale, for 2015 we booked Jet2 the day they went on sale in Apr. It works out cheaper & no tour reps!!

Hi Rose

Glad you had a good holiday, it seems to have gone by all too quickly.

As you know we've travelled to Cephalonia independently for years now, however (though bearing in mind we fly from Manchester) we are seriously considering going with the tour operator next year because, even without the inclusive car hire fiasco, it's way cheaper than doing it independently to our preferred accommodation - the Almyra. The last 3 holidays we've done a 2 centre which we've enjoyed but not as practical with a TO though.

Good advice, as ever from Bob and thisisthe1. We were really pleased to see that a low cost airline (jet2) was flying from 3 northern airports though for various reasons their Wednesday flights aren't that convenient for us, we had expected their presence to bring the other operators flights down but it hasn't worked out that way. TC, Thomson and Monarch flights have been on sale for a couple of months now but in excess of £420 each, May and June.

Easyjet tend not to release their sales until Oct/Nov ? by which time the other operators have often sold their seats for certain dates and or, have raised their prices.

Assuming that the accommodation you've found is still in or around Fiscardo you've also got to factor in hiring a car from the airport for the duration of the holiday. You should be able to do a costing now, with any possible saving by booking Easyjet when their flights go on sale being an added bonus!

It'll be an interesting exercise and I'd love to hear how you get on!

Being nosy would also be interested in the accommodation you've found if in Fiscardo, by PM if you prefer, we don't go at the same time so I promise not to pinch it :-)

Regards Eileen

We used to go to Kefalonia post Captain Corelli's Mandolin with tour operators as the island was such a popular destination. Over the years many of the UK tour operators have withdrawn from the island and in a way forced a lot of people to book independently.

We did enjoy our tour operator holidays but now enjoy our flight only ones much more now. We sometimes travel by Thomson from Manchester and a few years back there were very few independents on board but it is noticeable now how few coaches there are at the airport and how long the queues are at the car hire stands.

Hope you had a wonderful time Rose. Like you, we're thinking next year about going independently and would be very interested to hear about where you've found to stay. We were thinking Dafnoudi hotel might be nice.

We loved where Villa Penelope is situated and might consider going back again but they need to sort out the cleaning schedule first, I had to chase the rep to get towels sheets etc., changed which I wasn't very happy about.
