Lefkada is the easier to approach island in Greece for locals, as its the only one where you can reach it by car!:). However, for out of country travellers, its a pitty that no other airport than the one in Preveza is nearby.

So if you are happy to use the local transportation in Greece, you may either fly to Araxos (ryanair fly there) or to Kefalonia island (some charter flights exist).

From Araxos, you need to get to Patra, then to Antirion, and then take the bus to Lefkada from there. You can do all these in one day, even if these sound too hard for a tourist. The worst in that cases is that you may not have too much info gained by local bus sites (not sure if they even exist...) so as to check the connection times

From Kefalonia, and as its right south of Lefkada on the map, in the past there was a simple ferry conenction between the islands. I guess its better to contact a loca, tourist operator in Kefalonia to provide more info on this.

Finally, another option is to travel in Athens and then get the bus to Lefkada (apxtly 4 hours).

Hope the above help

Other options are Kefalonia and Corfu. Details in mine and others posts using the search facility.

I don't think Ryanair fly to Araxos from the UK any more - only Italy and Cyprus.

Hi Al,

Not just charter flights to Kefalonia.

Easyjet fly there from Gatwick and Ryanair from Stansted.

Then a taxi (about 70 euros) from Airport to Fiscardo and ferry to Lefkada.

Alternatively from Airport to Argostoli (taxi fare about 20 euros) and then bus to Fiscardo IF (and it is a big IF!)

the timetable suits. See link but also check timetable as it is a couple of years old.

Hope this helps a bit

Hello from Corfu.Lefkada is a very common weekend destination for Corfiots. So you could fly in Corfu, rent a car and drive to Lefkada. It is a2 hours drive from Igoumenitsa port. You could use Corfu as a stopover or in combination. At the end it isnt going to be cheaper, I think, but you will have a car to go around and the whole area is very beautiful.

Think your best option is to fly to Athens, its a 5 hour bus ride from Athens to Lefkada (cost about 40 euros), Unless you have your transport the other end, the Corfu option not that straight forward, (ferry to Igoumenitsa, bus to Preveza, bus Preveza to Lefkada) and the kefalonia option (long way to Fiskardo from airport, ferry to Vasiliki but not that often probably only 2 a day, are a lot more difficult.

Also Easyjet to Thessaloniki, then bus to Lefkada but it only runs 3 days a week so you'd have to plan carefully.

We usually find the cheapest and most flexible option is Easyjet to either Athens or Thessaloniki, then hire a car -- but obviously this is only cheaper if you were planning to rent a car anyway for all or most of your holiday .

If you don't want a car, try Easyjet or any of numerous charter flights to Corfu from all over the UK, then bus or taxi from Corfu airport to the port, then ferry to Igoumenitsa (cheap & frequent), then bus Igoumenitsa to Lefkada, this bus runs every day but if the times were not convenient you might have to spend a night in Corfu or Igou.

If you do take the Corfu route but still want to rent a car, your best bet is to take the ferry on foot to Igoumenitsa then pick up a car there. This is the shortest drive (2.5 hours leisurely drive Igoumenitsa to Corfu). You might get a cheaper car hire deal by hiring in Corfu rather tha in Igou, but be warned, you'd not only have to pay the ferry crossing for the car, but also the car hire company may insist on an extra insurance payment (as much as E25 each way) to take your car on the ferry! Any time you want to take a hire car on a ferry in Greece, always check with the rental company first, as some of them have very strict rules and you don't want to invalidate your insurance.

This is a very valid point and and as kyklamina suggests - look closely at the T&C's as some impose additional ADX of up to €1000. Sustaining damage on ferries is commonplace and of the ten crossings we've made in the last four years we have had damage on three occasions and been responsible for none - fortunately (maybe unfortunately) we were using our own vehicle.

Looking at the cost of flights into Preveza and comparing to Athens/Thessaloniki it shows a massive saving to do this and hire a car. Until 2009 we used to fly into Preveza/Athens/Thessaloniki, whichever offered the best value including car hire - latterly it was not Preveza.
